Savage XL Super Heavy-duty Axle Upgrade - 05.31.2008, 01:06 PM

Since I seem to be snapping the stock Savage X Heavy-duty axles almost every time I run I ordered the XL Super heavy-duty axle set to see if they'll hold up to brushless power. The set includes all 4 axles, 4 inner drive cups and 4 outer drive cups for $80. They are considerably beefier and add 2 oz of weight to your driveline. Since I had to disassemble the diffs to change the out drives, I cleaned out the grease and filled the diffs with Mugen 10K weight diff oil. I'm hoping this will tame the erratic handling in loose dirt.

Here's a comparison pic:

I'll be running the truck tomorrow with my new Tekno Neu 1515 1.5d on 4s so I'll see if they hold up.

I had the slipper loose enough that it wouldn't wheelie, even on pavement.

I'm happy to say that I these axles haven't bent or twisted. That's on 6s and 4s with the 1515/1y. I've stripped 2 rear diffs, but the axles are perfect.

Time for better diffs now!

Nah, I've also upgraded to the machined ring and pinion gear from the XL. I shim them properly too. It's my driving. My Savage spends most of it's time at a small BMX track that has a 6ft jump that is vertical at the peak. On 6s, this 15lb truck will hit almost 20ft and pull 15ft on 4s. Every once in a while I have a brain fart and use too much brakes causing the nose to drop, so instead of nosing it into the ground I hit the gas at the last minute which puts a big strain the the rear diff pinion (the only part that strips).

I've been having a hard time finding the sweet spot on the 52t XL slipper so I've left it on the tighter side. With only 1 slipper pad it's not as good as the dual slipper.

Yeah don't loosen the slipper too much or you burn up pads and melt stuff. I assume you have the metal spur so melting stuff shouldn't be a problem but the pads still burn/melt/fall apart if it is set too lose.

If you want to try something a little different with your diffs get some cen diffs. They are cheap from ebay and they have massive teeth so are less prone to stripping. They also use bigger bearings at the out drives so they don't fall apart as often. They fit perfectly and all you have to do to get them in the savage is swap to the savage out drives and drill out the hole on the out drive for the pin a little. The pinion also requires 1mm of shimming as well I think.

I am about to put the cen diffs in my nitro savage and the out drive and dogbone kit you posted once they show up. The cen diffs are already in my brushless savage but I haven't been able to beat on them yet.

Savage: FLM Conversion, 6s, MMM, CC 1520.
Mini-T Pro: Micro Pro 6800kv, Lipo, HS-81mg, Dirt Hawgs
M18MT: Quark 33A, Y22S 6000kv, FP 2s Lipo
LRP S8-BX: RC-M Conversion, Tekin RX8 B1600KV, 6S.
