My 8 project - 08.15.2008, 11:43 PM

I came across a deal on a 8 and snatched it up,got a tekno conversion kit and ordered a neu 1512 2.5d from rc-m for it after the recomendation from members here
I am running a mm esc with a thunder power 5s 5000mah 25c pack with the mm cutoff custom 16v.
I have run a few packs through the buggy now,WOW is all I can say

This thing rips,it is a little too fast for me at 100% endpoint on the transmitter, just balloons the tires and wanders all over the track,I have found it drivable at 75% and still has the "nitro" speed down the straights.
I am getting right at 20mins runtime running it as hard as I can,Does this sound about right or should I be getting more.
The temps after the voltage cut is 150 motor,120 esc,120 batt's.
Geared 13-48.
Here are some pics of the buggy still dirty from the track, and some of the body I just painted.
Thanks again for all the info,
Kevin

Looks great!!! That's good runtime too. It must be mighty fast since we usually run the 2.5D on 4s, LOL.

p.s. It looks like the motor plates under the motor mount may be in the reverse position. You can turn them around so the clutch assembly is better supported on the shaft.

It's the Tekno motor mount.

I'll check that out, thanks for the tip.

on 5s the buggy is a rocket, had to turn the endpoint down to make it "driveable"
I have run it on 4s also, run the endpoint back to 100%,saw the same runtime with the 4s batt I ran,I would have thought 5s with less endpoint would be better runtime than 4s with 100%

4s and 100% endpoint is certainly more efficient than 5s and 75% endpoint. If you use a pinion gear 4/5 the size with 5s and 100% endpoint you'll probably get even more runtime.

What brand/type clutch and bell do you use? Is it the traxxas style or a std 1/8 scale clutch? You should be able to go down to a 12t bell, and go back up with the throttle epa...

Also remembered that losi brought out a 50t spur, that would help lower the gearing too...

I saw the 50t today,I am running the traxxas style clutch.
the lowest bell I can find is the 13 racers edge bell that comes with the kit.

I may go the tekno long shank pinions, and run a 12t with the 50t spur.this setup with the 5s would give longer runtimes?I am trying to be able to get 30mins if possible.the bigger races I run have 30min a-mains.

I don't think you'll be able to get 30 minutes unless you put in a bigger battery. Some other options (although more costly) to trying to squeeze the gearing would be to go to 4s and increase capacity (resulting in longer runtime), or getting a slower motor that isn't so crazy on 5s (1600-1800kv) and use regular gearing (also resulting in longer runtime). Still, 30 minutes is a long time. We can do 20 minutes with a 5s/5350, so 30min could require 7000-8000mah to do it without damaging the packs. But with such a big pack, handling and weight really become an issue.

i think you would be about right at 20mins

im about to do a similar setup too , 1512 2.5d , hyper 8 , MM , 5s flight power 4900mah
so will let you know runtime (im guessing 15-20mins, i just dont understand how ppl can get such long runtimes , do they ever squeeze the trigger?)

RIP 4x MMM . MM still lives on !

I am running a losi 8 converted with all the RCM goodies, a 1515 2.5d/f and a MM geared 16/48.. geared for around 35mph and i get a little over 30 minutes of track racing with a flightpower 4s 5000.

The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

I raced today,ran a 15min main with about 2-3 laps of warmup.
I haven't charged back up yet to see how many ma the battery takes to know how much runtime I had left.
but praticing at the track the other night I got a solid 20min's
I am probably going to go down to 4s,I won with the buggy today, had great laptimes, but it is had to drive with all of that power.
Opened up alot of peoples eyes today.

Sylvester
how big is the track you run on?I am geared 13-48 with the 5s motor run 155-160 today, batt's came off the main at 135,esc 110
When I ran it on 4s the other night, same gearing motor ran roughly the same temps, esc the same, the batt's were a little cooler though 110.

The track is about 150ft/100ft so its fairly big!
My temps were not hot enough to burn my finger i can hold it all day long on the motor and esc, the battery is luke warm after the run.

Maybe I need to go up in pinion gear then?

battery just charged,it took 2450mah on the tp 1010c charger.
that is after the 15 min race,it would be real close to making 30,if I had good throttle control
