Gear for Rustler??

I'm just getting my ruster back togeather and need some help deciding on what gear to run. I have 86, 83, and 90 tooth spur gears, and pinions from 13 - 33 tooth. Car: FLM rustler chasis, RPM arms, stock rusty trans/ case for now. Electronics: Futaba 3003 servo, MM with novac cap, exturanl BEC, and integy fan, and a cc 5700 motor for now (will be getting 3300kv 50mm medusa though). Batteries are 3S 4300mAh Zippy pack and and 2 x 2S 4300mAh Zippy packs for 4S opperation, and I've got a 2S max amps 4000mAh pack that I may use for some bashing.

I want to gear for high speed (on road only)with the 4S setup and then be able to switch to less cells for lower speeds/ off road bashing. Any sugestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Are you looking for one gear to cover both on road and off road? In my experience 23/83 has yielded me the best top speed. 17-19 with the 90t spur will be good for off roading, just check your temps. Or if you mixed it up for both on/off road, I'd say 17/83 will be a good mix of high speed and fun in the dirt. I've hit 46 and 55 with 17/83 gearing with a 2s and 3s respectively with my 6900 rustler. Might I suggest some decent 2.2 on road truck tires for doing asphalt runs. Currently I'm using hpi v groove onroad truck tires. They don't balloon up very much and they keep you nice and steady. They won't wheely, but they will spin you out of control if you give it too much throttle at low speeds. Anacondas however, will balloon, pull themselves apart, and will not keep your front end down. At high speeds, giving it full throttle will just flip your ride on its back. Just my experiences, I'd stay away from anacondas. Also you'll need steel gears in your transmission and I highly recommend the FLM trans case.

i have a rustler also that cant keep the teeth in the stupid stock plastic spur. too much power. any ideas where to get a steel spur for the Rustler?

swap over to 32p or mod1.

Switch to a revo spur with mod1 pinions. It's a drop-in conversion.

Raze ST- You shouldn't be running a MM5700 on 4s!

I'm sure the 5700 can handle 4s for a while. In that respect I shouldn't be running my 6900 on 3s, but I do! If you're having problems keeping good gear mesh, try some lunsford fatboy motor screws with the cup washer design. It will help out alot for getting a good solid mount on your motor. I occasionally strip spurs, but thats after a serious jolt to the motor and me not rechecking the mesh. Also if you get an FLM transmission case it will hold better than the stock plastic case because the aluminum case won't develop little grooves from having your motor in different positions like the plastic one will. Otherwise, someone does make an aluminum spur, not sure who, I seen it on ebay, which in my opinion, if you have that much problem keeping good mesh, you'd probably end up blowin through that as well and cost 10 times as much. If you truly think you have too much power then yeah go mod1.

Found it. It's not steel, but it ain't plastic either. Not too sure how well that'd hold up.

get tmaxx, jator or revo spurs- they are drop in- and can handle more power

Thanks for the replys guys.

I know I shouldn't be running the cc 5700 on 4S, but I do lots of stuff I'm not suposed to . Once I buy the medusa motor I'll be going with the 5mm shaft and upgrading to the revo/ jato spur slipper setup, and the FLM case.

For now I'm going to just play with what I have until I save up a little scratch or break something. As far as stripping spurs goes I too have that problem. I'm pretty sure that my mesh is good, but I know that I don't always check it after cartwheels across the parking lot. So maybe that plays a part. This time I also played with some of the settings on the mm to take out some start power.

I'll post up some results once I get it back on the street and a few runs past the radar gun.

I personally have my start power set to high and disabled the punch control and just use my finger to control the car best I can. Plus my slipper is tightened down so it wont slip. I've managed to get 67mph out of it without any extra weight up front or using wings/spoilers to keep the front down.
