12.31.2005, 11:37 PM
Can anyone tell me if a glued tire can be taken off a bad rim without tearing up the tire?
Thanks

Put it in the oven for 10mins and it should come off in one peice.
The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

you can preheat the oven to 400f then turn it off and put the tires in, once they are cooled down you should be able to get them off. The only bad thing about the oven method is that it smells a bit lol.
you could also try boiling them off, put them in a pot of boiling water on the oven and boil them till they come off.

Wouldn't an oven melt the wheel? Does it only need to go in for a few minutes?

i have never tried it lol. But its been asked on the other 4 forums that i am on and everyone always recommends the oven method. So i guess the wheel doesnt melt. your supposed to leave them in the oven till it cools down. but i would keep my eye on them.
A easier way to get them off is to put them in a bowl of acetone, and you leave them over night or 2 and they just come off.

Well I've never tried this, but you can get superglue softener, which is meant to break down superglue. Maybe that would work.

I have boiled them off before. Works fairly well. You still have to man handle them off a little . It did discolor one of my sets of rims because I boiled them too long though.

I've used the oven method a few time's and like it. It doesn't melt a plastic wheel(allthough velo disc's may do just that) and both wheel and tire + insert are re-usable.
Allthough i've used a slightly different way. Put the tire's in the oven and set the temp at 180 degrees.(200 degrees for alum rim's) When the oven is at it's temp, take out the tire's and try to remove them. They should come loose, if not, throw em back in for 5 min's and try again.
Be warned. It does smell nasty, so it is adviced to clean your oven before cooking any food in it. You may not like rubber taste on your pizza.

I have used the oven method a few times as well. It does smell(make sure the women of the house are not home or you will be in BIG TROUBLE!!). I heat the oven up to full temp(550), put the wheels inside and turn it off. Comne back in 30 minutes(gloves may help here!) and the wheels are pretty hot, but the tires peel off fairly easily. I then dremel the inner bead of the tires to clean them up before re-gluing them onto another wheel.
The de-bonder doesn't work too great(tried it-no dice). I haven't tried boiling either(need a big pot to boil 4 MT sized tires!).

Thanks, the oven sounds good. I have "Big Joes" so boiling would be a problem, and I already tried the glue softner. Now all I have to do is get the old lady out of the house for a few hours lol :W: :L: :L:
