E-Firestorm and Mamba?? - 05.17.2008, 07:01 PM

Anyone out there playing with HPI's E-Firestorm? I got on when they first came out (yes, before the Flux!!) I'm trying to get the most speed out of as I can. Haven't gone Lipo yet, but soon! Trying the Mamba, high power NiMH's and pinion changes so far, and I'm up to 40 mph on GPS. Anyone know where to get smaller spurs for them??

I've had my E-firestorm for a while now and here are the esc/motor combos I've tried:

1st: Velineon, 7700, 2s lipo - unable to gear down enough - motor got too hot
2nd:Velineon, 8l, 3s lipo - esc would cut out for no reason, eventually one of the motor plugs on the esc broke
3rd: MM, CCBEC, Feigao 8l, 3s lipo - insane geared at 20/50 32 pitch. would wheelie at any speed. couldn't drive it at more than half throttle. it would either wheelie or balloon the tires to nearly twice their size. I did manage to break the diff spider gears with this motor by landing a few jumps on power with the slipper set too tight.
4th: Sidewinder, 5700, 3s lipo - ESC got way too hot. dropped to a 2s but just not fast enough.
5th: MM, 5700, 3s - perfect geared at 17/87 48 pitch. Completely drivable with good throttle control and will easily pull double backflips on jumps.

I pretty much run the 3s when I just want to be stupid. It's way more power than you'll ever need and you have to be good with the trigger to keep the nose on the ground. It really is fast enough on 2s and a lot easier to drive. I'm running 2.2 badlands for more ground clearance although taking turns too fast will tend to roll the truck over.

I also cleaned the grease out of the diff and use 30K diff fluid. Everything else is bone stock. I haven't confirmed this yet, but the Kyosho RB5 spur gears look the same as the HPI spurs and drop down into the 70 tooth range. I'll pick one up and try it out.

Overall it's a great truck that has proved very durable considering that I'm notoriously hard on my trucks. There's a little bit of video of my E at the end on 2s (forgot to charge my 3s) that was ended after the screws pulled out of my MM after way to many bad landings.

Cool video!! Nice flips! Never tried that as I don't run on tracks all that much. Mostly, I've been just trying to see how much straight line speed I can get. I have to agree, the 17 tooth pinion is nice for all around running. Let me know about that spur if you get one. I actually just modified my motor plate to make a 35 tooth pinion from RR fit. I'm gonna try it tomorrow to see what kind of top end I get out of it. Pray for my Mamba......

Pulling in an old one... anyone out there still running these? I have one with a 5700 sidewinder in it. Haven't ran it since bought my revos (pre-lipo). Now that I'm getting more familiar with lipos, I thought I'd start her up again and see what she can do on lipos. Any thoughts or suggestions? I was running NiMH, 4600, 7 cells and kept burning them up. I think I have a 19 tooth pinion on right now. I'll probably gear down for lipo. Even if you're not running a firestorm, but some other system. Just looking for some advice on the motor/esc capacity (outside of what's printed) based on experience.

Thanks.

I'll bump once and let it go. Any thoughts from anyone on this? From what I've seen searching different forums (and this one), 2S is the best way to go for the sidewinder and 5700 motor.

I still run mine. I've had it since the first day it hit the shelves. I run a sidewinder 5700 system on 2S 5000 MAH 20C and 25C LiPos. Stock gearing. It was my favorite truck for a while until I built-up my E-Savage. It's becoming my go-to truck if I'm going to be running in a big parking lot or park with short-cut grass...don't really need a monster-truck based vehicle for that environment. Sometimes I'm also just more in the mood to wheel a 2WD around a track instead of bashing my E-Savage through one! Just last night I back-ordered a pair of ProLine Gladiators for dedicated off-road tires (I'll slap on the bald tires for paved lot bashing)... I'm hoping these gladiators will be durable enough to last awhile but still have enough traction to use as practice tires on race day. I'm intending to take this back out to the track this summer for some racing as a secondary class to run. I'm putting together an electric 1/8 buggy to be my primary racer.
