Help with programming options Hobby King SS 100a esc - 01.10.2010, 02:43 PM

I grabbed one of these esc on my last order just to check it out. I got it installed in a Savage XL on 6s and put in a 14xl. I know it's not the optimal setup. It’s just expendable.

The first couple of time I ran through the bells, beeps, whistles, etc. and made my selections. I read that I actually needed to save those choices when all was said and done. So after figuring out that one most of my questions. I think I am getting closer but I still have a hair trigger launch on this thing. I was hoping to get some clarification on the setting and how they would apply to a car setup. There are 6 options in the manual

1. Cell type and no of cells
2. Throttle Settings
3. Brake Settings
4. Direction and Cutoff Type
5. Timing Mode
6. PWM Setting

* - default setting

#1 is self expanitory to me.

After putting some of this in writing. I know see there can me more then one default per category or rather the category can have more then one sub category each with it own default..

#2 Throttle settings
2.1 Auto Throttle Range*
2.2 1.1ms to 1.8ms
2.3 Hard Acc*
2.4 Soft Acc

For #2
The option 2.1 and 2.2 are they for the over all range of the throttle or is that a setting for neutral?

I thought I had it programmed to 2.4 but still may have the default setting of 2.3.
Is this were the hair trigger start is coming from?
Can these esc throttle have a smooth acceleration or is it something the finger and transmitters exp needs to deal with?

#3 Brake Setting
3.1 No Brake
3.2 Soft Brake*
3.3 Medium Brake
3.4 Hard Brake

For #3
What do they mean by brake settings?
They must be different for airplanes/props When I had it set up with the default it felt like a strong drag brake. I have it set for no brake and using the mechanical brakes now.

#4 Direction and Cuttoff Type
4.1 Clokcwise Rotation*
4.2 Counterclockwise Rotation
4.3 Soft Cutoff
4.4 Hard Cutoff*

For #4
that is a tough one but I thinkg one spings to the left and one to the right. Hard cutoff is something that Loranna Bobbit would do if you lipos wandered to close to her lvc threshold. Soft would be you get a warning before you junk gets whacked.

#5 Timing Mode Setting
5.1 1degree - For 2-4 Pole Inrunner Motors*
5.2 7degree - For 6-8 Pole Motors
5.3 15degree - For 10-14 Pole Outrunner Motors
5.4 30degree - For 10-14 Pole high RPM Outrunner Motors

For #5
I have this left as default.
Are most of the more common brushless motors 2-4 pole?
What would the effect be (bad/good) if a different setting was used?

#6 Pulse Width Modulation Settings
6.1 For low RPM and low pole count motors*
6.2 For most out runner motors

For #6
Not sure about this. Left it at default but I thought this might have to do with the transmitter. I am using the 4Pk right now but will also be using the DX3R also. Has nothing to do with my transmitter?

As far as programming it goes. They indicate you select the section to go into by releasing the throttle to neutral. Then while in section #2 when you hear the # of beep for the option you want to select if by pulling throttle again. Then it starts all over from the very beginning. To save you selection you apply the brake. Do you save it after each selection? I might try it that way since it starts over from the beginning again already.

Thanks for the help and any tips on setting it up so it stops breaking stuff in the house would be great. The dogs are bit shy around this one after the unexpected attacks on them. I’m glad it doesn’t have reverse. I would have a couple of broken knees the way this hair trigger is.

2. I'd figure thats how quickly the throttle reacts from neutral- soft acceleration woudl be ideal if you can manage to get it programmed & saved.

3. One mans soft is anothers hard- you may be able to dial it down somewhat with epa, but it is a plane/boat esc after all- no proportional or gradual braking effect..

4. Your anaolgy is correct, and highly ammusing. Soft cutoff will probably cause the throttle to either reduce power before eventually cutting out fully, or maybe pulse the throttle before..

5. Yeah, most BL inrunners are 2 pole (feigao, lehner,) or 4 pole (neu, medusa, castleneu). If you turned up the timing then it would cause much greater current draw for precious little improvement in power, resulting in melted electronics eventually.

6. Thats something PDelCast talked about a while back- different motors have different ideal drive frequencies, but without knowing what they are specifically it can have an adverse effect on either the motor or the esc ( motor might like a higher frequency, but it means the esc has to work harder, and viceversa ). Best left as it is really yeah.

Cant really help with the actual programming routine- using the tx to select all the options & settings would be my idea of hell....
