Dying your fuel tank?

I am trying to black out my Savage. I was going to remove the chrome from the wheels. and I got this crazy idea of dying my gas tank. Using standard RIT dye. Your thoughts? As to what this could do to the visibility of the fuel (would depend on how long it was in there). Would I dye the inside AND out? Would the dye get into the fuel, what could this do to the engine?

p.s. anyone know if the stock Savage tires are white or black plastic? If they turn out white, I don't really want to boil the tire off to dye them...

I haven't seen it done, but it shoulld work. I'd only dye the outside. A little dye in the fuel wouldn't really hurt anything, but why dye the inside?

No idea on the wheels. What savage wheels have you got?

If the dye will dye PE (polyethylene) it should work. As far as colorfastness, IDK. You can test by dying a small part and then soak in nitro, otherwise just do the outside. The dye should pretty much penetrate the whole plastic, so it may not matter much.

Just didn't want to ruin a gasket. Remember, this water will be quite hot... Probably just about a little under boiling temp. It might look cool with just a black "tint", and not the entire thing blacked out. I'd like to still be able to see the fuel.

I don't have to dye the inside, just guessing that might be better. Maybe if I just put the cap on, and left the fuel tubing on (out of the water), I could just get a tint on the outside.

I think the wheels are white. I saw some E-revo ones that turned out black when they were done. But around the hexes and stuff of mine is all white. And since i'd rather not boil them off the wheel to dye, they are going to stay chrome. I have the Savage X (4.1, not 4.6).

Another question that just came up...; if I was washing out the gas tank and there was still water in it, is it ok to have a little in the fuel?

I would dye the wheels. If I'm not mistaken, when you dye a chrome wheel black, it turns into black chrome since the color of the chrome depends on whats underneath it.

I was going to remove the chrome prior for a flat black. I didn't want any chipping.

Black tint will turn out purple if you don't leave it in long enough.

Apparently i didn't....

Is it too late to re-dye it? I thought anytime black wasn't solid (left in for a while) it turned out purple? which would mean that there is no way to get a black tint (as opposed to purple). not sure I am ready for solid black yet.

it should take more dye and becme black. don't leave any water in your fuel tank, you may need to blow it out or brace the cap open to let it air dry

i died min gas tank on my t-maxx black, it came out more tinted and you could still see the fuel, i just removed the cap to dye it. and wiped down the inside to get any RIT residue out, i left it in as long as the other parts i was dyeing at the same time. i dont think it will dye solid black because of the kind of plastic, like lexan wont dye.
