Question HB D8 electric - 06.19.2009, 06:30 PM

hey guys my hot bodies d8 showed up today and it showed up with a mamba monster v3 esc and a fiegao fg 36 motor.i am running this on 5s and i was wondering how hot shuld the motor get because mine got up to 217.And also is this motor as good as the 2200kv mamba motor.i had tons of fun driving it today.it also has a rc monster hb d8 motor mount.but the onlyt bad thing was that it has a crappy pinion in it and my 2nd question is what pinion shuld i get and what tooth.also what would be the best set up for racing as far as gear wise spur and pinion.Thanks.

Well you definitely need to gear down with temps like that ! What spur count you have and battery are you useing ?
Lets see some pictures, I haven't seen a converted D8 yet and thinking about building one.

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.

Fiegao and the Castle Neu are not even close in performance.. LOL The Castle is a ton more efficient, is capable of more hp, and will run a ton cooler and have longer run times on the same config. They may be at similar kv ratings, but that is all they have in common :)

PS at 200 (or more) your motors magnets start to demagnetize and you do damage.. Running that same setup the castle would be 130-160 range at most. If you don't get a Castle Neu, at the very least get a Medusa v2 60mm, don't forget to use the discount code if it's still listed.

http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/_top_speed.html Use this calculator to figure out your gearing combination. I'd shoot for about 35mph to start. You'll actually be going closer to 40 with tire ballooning and thats usually enough for all but the biggest tracks.

If you get one go for the 2200, the 2650 is too fast iMO for racing expecially on 5s lipo. Typically a 13 or 14t pinion is perfect on 4s lipo, going w/ 5s lipo even 12t will be a little fast for racing at a track. Bashing should be fine... you may want to swap to truggy gearing in your diffs to slow it down some... that or like I said go w/ the medusa motor and get a much lower KV to better work w/ your voltage. Use the calculator listed above.

They are both too fast for the track on 5s. get yourself a 1600kv 70mm medusa. Gear for around 38mph and go have a blast.

That Feigao motor is useless for the track. Its a fine motor if you just want to try the electric thing out and see if you like it. But you will never race with it without overheating it.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

My D8 has been working great for me. I would opt for a lower KV motor than the Castle one. If you're short on money, go for a Medusa with a KV between 1600 and 1900 for 5s. And use the calculator that Overdriven linked to to figure out your gearing. Aim for between 30,000 and 35,000 RPM.

Edit: jhautz beat me to it... at least we were thinking the same way.
