different motor for muggy on 6s - 07.07.2009, 10:52 AM

i was currantly running my muggy on 5s 5000 w/ mmmv3 neu 1515 1y geared 14/46 and needless to say runtimes were short and the pack was getting hot and the motor was a bit to warm for liking as well. over all it was just something torn from my crt that was enough to show me i really like this thing, the drivetrain is awsome, and so im looking to know what motor i should run and i want 6s so i can gear down if need be over running hot, so im thinking the 1521 1y is my best bet. will i have any concerns running this motor? also if im ordering new i might as well get the 8mm shaft since mike is now making pinions i see. i just want a cool running setup and great runtimes geared for about 45 on 40 series yet still room to gear down for 420 series

How much does that thing weight fully loaded?

Im thinking something in the 1600kv range would be best for 6s lipo and those very reasonable top speeds of around 45mph you are after. My first choice would be that 1521 1y for sure, 2nd option would be an 80mm Medusa in 1600kv flavour (cheaper, great quality, just not quite as powerful).

Definitely something in that range.

Here's is a Medusa 80-1600 for sale as well.

Another good strong choice would be the Neu 1515/1.5Y. I've run that motor previously and its a BEAST! A really strong motor!

i think it was around 12lbs if im right, im pretty hooked on neu motors as i love my other one 1515 1y, but figured i can trade it off plus some cash for a 1521 1y, after further reading here am i going to have problems running my mmmv3 with 6s and this motor?

MMM's run pretty strong on 6s with a lower Kv motor. Now if you were stressing it out with a 1.5D on 6s all the time, it might groan at the amp draw.

A 1521/1Y would be amazing in the Muggy as well and should run pretty cool. I think Linc is currently running that setup in his Muggy.

I wouldnt have thought you'd have issues- you arent making a 70mph+ speed machine, so the load the motor places on the esc and batts wont be that problematic. Like for like, my Gmaxx is 13lbs and I run the 80mm 2000kv Medusa on 5s lipo without issue, so perhaps that might be better (slightly more tame motor = less current draw kinda thinking)..

I think the 8mm pinions Mike is making is for Mod1.5 as used in 1/5th scale... not positive on that.

the only issues ive had were from running a 2200kv motor on 5s geared for 14/46 which is like 52 and i never even seemed to get that fast. but the lowest i can go is 13 on the pinion before the motor is hitting stuff. but was reading others having problems with the 1521 1y on 6s. so was just making sure ill be ok

Well, I started with a hacker c50 11xl on the muggy, and it was ok. Temps were a bit higher than I liked. So i went with a 1521 1y. Noticeable difference in motor, esc and battery temps. Both motors have very similar kv, so I did not change gearing. I think I run 15/49 right now, so around 40 or maybe a little more. Currently have badlands on it.

The neu has more torque, and I am guessing it is slightly more efficient. It is a bigger/heavier motor than the c50 xl, but overall power output seems to be about the same. My 4500 30c 6s fp lipo does run about 10 deg cooler, as does the motor, and the esc fan does not come on as much. I would recommend the motor for the muggy, that is for sure.

On a side note I am not really impressed with the medusa motors... I have compared the 60mm to a few c50 L can motors and the l cans run cooler and put out more power... I do like big power though. Given the option i will take a used neu over a medusa any day. I paid around 180 each for both of my 1521 1y motors, one was almost new and the other was brand new. No point buying an 80mm medusa if the neu is 20-30 bucks more...

Don't you mean you'll take a used hacker or neu any day? I personally like the medusa motors, great prices, decent temps and the best CS I've seen out of any company. Hackers run about $300 new and neus about $250, while you can get a similarly spec'd medusa for $110-130.

Fixed that mistake in the wording...

There is no similarly spec-ed medusa to a 1521 neu... The 80mm medusa is about even with a 1515.

I do agree that Hacker motors are way too expensive, but i can find the c50 xl motors used for around 100 bucks. Heli guys usually buy them, so they get no real abuse.

Medusa are cheaper new, no doubt about that. I would rather have a neu, and if you are pushing the envelope, nothing else will perform as well as the neu. I also think that most medusas could be replaced with the castle 2200 motor and different gearing, those are great motors, and i cannot wait until cc make some more wind options.

I also have a tekin motor to try, I have a feeling it will outperform medusa as well, plus it is designed to be used in a car. I have the 1550 kv truggy motor, so I plan to try it on 6s with a MMM and see how it does!
