Mod to fix or replace castles crappy ESC fan? - 10.24.2009, 12:42 AM

I've PAID for and burnt about 4 fans and replaced 6... is there any mods or better fans out their to fix castle crappy included fan? This is retarded, I don't even want to try and get it covered as I just get more JUNK fans. My buggy's esc is overheating, motor and batts are great temps but due to the fan not working after about 12minutes it Thermals and shuts down... getting annoying. Problem is I'm already geared too high for the track and typically to reduce ESC temp your gear up a touch if all other components are cool. 13/48 gearing (8ight-e)

tehe someone told you so.. lol

I've seen some people putting a mesh screen on the top of the fan to keep rocks and such out. Do you have any horrific driving conditions?

did you cut the top off the esc? i do this to mine and they run about 20 degrees cooler, i have glued an external 5 and 12v fan on top of the heatsink, i hooked the 5v up to the existing plug and the 12v i soldered right to the bullets, but as of right now i can run 15+ minutes without a fan on my bug and trug

It's funny w/ my tekno conversion all of this last season I could run as much as I wanted pack after pack after pack and never overheat... now that I'm running the losi conversion, something about it and my ESC overheats.. I'm only geared 13/48 and there is no binds anywhere, basically stock w/ my MMM system, speed is nice not out of control but the heat just builds up faster. I just dropped a kyosho plastic 44t spur in to see if the gearing will help, but I highly doubt it, sometimes when everything else is cool and the ESC is not the system is undergeared.. if that doesn't work, I'll drop to a 50t spur and see what it does.

Back on subject if the fan wasn't junk I wouldn't have to worry about any of this.. guess it's time for me to cut the top off and take matters into my own hands.

No way that esc should be thrermalling.

I hav ran 15 minute mains with a MMM 2200kv combo in my 8ight. With no fan.

check for binding in the drivetrain

I am with Ben on this one. You changed the conversion and started having problems, so that is where I would start looking.

Please note.. I included I already looked for binding issues.. rechecked all bearings it spins freely.. perfect actually. This is a BRAND NEW BUILD, everything is new and it rolls smoother than my tekno 8ight did.

It does weigh more...
It is geared to a different ratio

It maybe around the 15min mark, but I didn't want to extend the time as I didn't watch the clock either time... it thermaled.. I get through about a pack (4s 5k Hyperion)

Cut off the plastic covering the heatsink and it'll get better natural airflow, cutting a hole in the body will allow for even more. You could try putting another fan on but IMO if you were killing the stock fans you'd better find a pretty good fan to replace it or you'll just toast the new fan as well.

Yes, I dremeled off the top and pulled the fan right out, trimmed down the case on the sides oppisite the wires flat so it should get real nice natural air flow.. the fan wasn't working before and w/o the "winter hat" on it I'm sure my run time will move up. Racing today, will find out soon enough :)

I have two MMM ESC's that when the fan runs makes it a zzzzzzz sound. I think a blade is rubbing something. I have broken so many fans on my RC's over they years (not on the MMM though). I wish there was a stronger model of fan.

Is it possible to fix the zzzzzz sound or should I not worry about it till after it breaks completely?

Fired "Frostbyte" up for a bash session this morning and it made its first tell tale sound of a failing fan grinding away. Uh oh......

Will the ESC work if I just unplug this stupid fan? I want to position a 40mm fan on the body just above the ESC instead. Have done this in my Mini Slash and it works great.

Has anyone tried this fan. It is made by Integy, so I don't know if it is any good!

I run a piece of foam on top of the ESC held in place by the Traxxas hold down, the fan has stayed clean so far and isn't showing any signs of giving up yet!
