Just another Remote Controlled Bed... -

I'm sure you all have seen tons of R/C beds before...
For the school play Ben and I had to create a remotely driven bed, that rocks in all directions. We are putton A Christmas Carol, and this bed will be used during Scrooge's nightmares. We took the control systems off of one of our old robots, mounted it on the bed along with 6 air compressors, and a ton of air cylinders, 4 pneumatic pistons(1.5in diamater, 8in stroke) and 3 solenoids to actuate the bed. For the drivetrain, we have 2 dualie-style wheels in the center, run off of 2 CIM motors each in a tank style configuration. they power the bed, while the rest of it sits on 4 huge casters. Powering the bed from hell are 2 12v 12Ah gel cell batteries in parallel. We will probably have to add a 3rd or 4th if we plan to move the bed while the compressors are running.
These videos are in chronological order of us getting this bed to run. Expect more videos and pictures soon! sorry for no sound on some of them, I didn't realize I had my laptop muted. Also, nothing happens in the first one til 1:30

Does it have a slot for quarters? I remember sleeping in a cheapy motel once that had a vibro bed that gave you 3 mins or something for a quarter. It was the kind of place most paid by the hour, not the night.
Anywho, your bed look cool, I like the drive setup!
Well the way our school is setup for performing arts center is sepereate from the main building... so we did what anyone would do- find the only large sliding door in the school and drive it right in. on a saturday!
then we had the.... make the bed spin like a top as fast as possible and see who could hold on longest... I kind of lost..
The set manager has an actual bed made to go ontop of this thing, matress, bed posts and all-will be very very sleeper (hope some of you got the bad pun)

here is the bed at it's first rehersal! all it needs to be done is a skirt around it to hide all the LED's. Oh, and a new pneumatic piston. We kinda bent one. And we have no clue how either. It was 3/8" stainless steel too. I shot this with my cell phone during rehersal tonight, so the quality sucks. Also, youtube doesn't like the audio codec my phone records in, so the sound on youtube is messed up too. Will post more pictures when I can.
ben was driving, we have a third kid who is controlling the compressors and the solenoids. It was too complex for ben to drive the bed on que, and work the compressors and solenoids. The reason I'm not is because I am running projections and sound effects for the play. 3/8 inch any kind of round steel is hard to bend in such a short size. it bent about 4 inches from the end of the piston arm.
