Like anything else, it takes practice and a bit of moolah.
However, if you are having Christmas Vacation moments and or starting fires with christmas lights, I HIGHLY suggest you discontinue handling them and go build snowforts instead.
I do it - It started out as a guilt thing from the wife and daughter. Then some of the Clark Griswald in me took over....Only have a about 1500 feet of lights so far (all LED), but I add a little every year.
Losi 8T 1.0, Savage Flux - XL style, LST XXL, Muggy, 3.3 E-Revo Conversion and sitting outside 425hp, 831 Tq Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel. It SMOKES
Nothing even close to the video but I've got a 20 ft weeping cherry tree in the front yard that's lit with blue leds and looks decent. I leave it up year round however though only lit around christmas. Don't know if it's the indoctrination, but this is my favorite time of the year.
When I was younger, say 12 yrs ago, my entire yard was light up with strands of light, handmade wooden figurines, scenes, candy canes and spotlights. It took an entire weekend to setup and take down. Looked quite amazing, but was painful.
Now we do a couple strands of lights and call it quits.

Thats what I have a evergreen in the front yard I put lights on 7 years ago and never took down, I plug them in around now and usually 1 strand is dead and i just unplug it and throw another in there, must be 10 dead strands in that tree.. It keeps growing too so the top doesnt have lights and im not buying a 50ft ladder.
