Changing from buggy to truggy gears -

Just came to the realization that my savage is running buggy style gears, its limiting my gearing choicces and wanted to go to the truggy pinion to get the higher ratio diffs. Will the savage bulkheads allow for this- or do i need a different setup?

Cant change to a truggy pinion as they have helical cut gears, you'd need to change both the ring and pinion gears- not sure if there are truggy ones that would be a direct fit for the savage diff cups.
Another option for a lower overall gear ratio would be to lock the truck into 1st gear instead of second, that'll allow you to have a lower overall topspeed using the same spurs and pinions you have now- same effect as using truggy gears instead of buggy ones. Not sure if thats a viable option for you, but it shouldnt be too techinally difficult if you have the parts of a fully functional tranny to play with.

IM ditching the transmission in favor of a center diff..
I have seen non helical truggy diffs. I just dont know if the bulkheads will accommodate it

you said change to the truggy pinion. I assume you mean ring AND pinion? It will work, but you need to keep the rings and pinions together. You can run either truggy diffs or buggy diffs, but can't mix and match truggy and buggy diff parts.

Then yes, truggy ring and pinions. i thought since they were the same tooth count they would be interchangable

woops, I spoke without all the facts. If the ring gear is the same tooth count it may mesh. I always err on the side of caution and keep ring/pinion sets together. I also assumed a different ring gear tooth count.
Regardless, you can run truggy gears.

alright, because the smaller pinion would mean that the diff would have to shift over - dont know if it would work in the savage bulkheads

it wouldn't work. what is the problem? geared too high? or too low? if it is geared too low, you can get an upgrade from hpi that turns the flux tranny from being locked in 1st gear to being locked in 2nd gear.

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

Those new HD diff gears for the flux will solve your problem, and no fitment issues...they are a lower ratio, and have more of a truggy style cut to them. Freeze has some decent pics of his freebies in his thread in the Savage forum.
