Help with LST2 brushless motor choices - 02.19.2010, 09:01 AM

I'm trying to figure out what motor to put in my LST2 brushless convesion. I have the FOC and the TiNi gears spur/pinions. I got the Dude's motor mount and a couple of 6s 5000mAH 25C LiPos. I gave up on mech brakes so I need a setup that can handle motor braking. I have a Tekin RX8/ 1700KV T8 but I don't think this will hold up. I was thinking a Neu 1521/1Y/F but they ain't cheap. Now I see the new Castle 1518 and 1520, which are cheaper than the Neus. Is the T8 or 1518 up to motor breaking a 13+ lbs MT? I'd like this set up to be as bullet proof as the standard nitro LST2.

I would opt for the 1521/1Y on 6s. I'm pretty sure thats the same setup Lincpimp uses in his LST and finds it to be plenty.

Now the 1518, 1520, and 1717 would all make good choices also, especially the 1717.

What lipo's do you have now?

IMO the 1520 is the ticket. I have that in my truggy and it's way more motor than I need on 5s

1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S

the 1717 is way too fat for a dude mount, get a 1520 or the 1521 neu.

Even a 1515 has plenty of power for braking. Brushless motors decelerate just as powerfully as they accelerate.

Better batteries are the key to a successful setup, because when braking the motor acts as a generator and puts power back into the batteries at a rapid rate, if the batteries aren't up to the task of accepting the current that power will try to bleed off as heat through your esc and that can make your esc go poof.

The best batteries you can get are your best bet for brushless.

I'll give another vote to the Castle/Neu 1520/1Y.

The 1717 fits without to much trouble. The hardest part is getting the gearing right.

It fits, but the 6mm shaft will cause pinion issues. Good try Harold, better luck next time. Good thing you are not the "oracle" of brushless, newbs everywhere would be screwed...

Ding, time for a cookie!

I will say the 1521 1y does great on 6s. So the 1520 cc motor should be fine. I ran a cc 2200 on 5s with truggy size tires and it did very well too. But if you plan to run bigger/heavier tires go with the 1520. 1600kv on 6s seems to be the ticket as it falls nicely with the 63/25 gearing that fits the tdr mount, and available setscrew pinions.

I ordered the Castle 1520/1Y from RC-Monster. I like the 200$ price tag for a finned motor. I have a Castle 1515/1Y in my Eight-T and love it. Hopefully I'll be ripping up the desert here in Iraq next couple of weeks.

What gearing are you going to run with that 1717? It's hard to get good gearing because it is too fat. That's what I meant. Duhhh

The first batch of 1717 was releast with a 6mm shaft but has since been changed to 5mm. Give me some time and I will let you know if the 1717 works. I have been a little off with my project because I purchased FlexTek arms and New Era parts but in a few weeks I will be ordering the motor and ESC. I am not in a hurry because we have snow all over the place in Pa.

Well you can get 25/63 without any issues. And if you trim the trans mount by the motor a little you can get it almost as close as a 15 series motor. Big pinions are a requirement for the lst, we just need some 26-30t hardened pinions...

The way you said it you implied that the motor would not physically fit on the tdr mount...

Eat your food Tina!!!

1515 1Y will do just fine. Mine loves it, and mine is simply raced on 4S....25mins mains is no problem with my batt combo.

Damn, nice runtimes. What battery combo? I'm thinking this is a plus on transmissions vs direct CD drive... I noticed differences in runtimes significantly with the same motor/esc/battery in a revo vs 8T.
