HV to MM and still ended in disaster - 03.30.2010, 01:49 AM

in January i finaly gave up on the HV as an1/8 scale system after a year of struggling with it and i got a mamba monster 2200 and converted my X1crt.My gearig started at 12/62 and setteled at 14/62.the thing had been perfect and the highest temps i ever saw was 137 on the ESC and 156 on the motor after a full 16 minute run.I only run on a race track and three to five runs once or twice a week.So i went to the track Sunday and put a 2sx2 pack in the truck and 1.5 laps in i slap landed our big jump and it quit and after trouble shooting i found each of the 2s packs had dropped a cell !? the packs were the Zippys that have become so popular and at $24.95 a pack, no great loss and then i dropped the second pair (also zippys) in the truck and it started right up so i started another run and it went 100' and stopped again this time only one of the packs droped a cell so now im pissed but live and learn so i gave up on the zippys and WILL NOT ORDER MORE! Anyway,i dropped my pair of reedy 50002s /35c in flipped the switch and it booted right up.during the start up sequence i did notice the motor didnt sound quite right but it did boot and it had been runnig so i pulled throtle and the ESC went up in smoke!? I quikly unplugged it and when i checked the reedys they are fine but the ESC's toast.I sent it back today and im sure castle's great service dept wil lhook me right up. After all this explination i guess my Question is are all these damn systems this problematic and unreliable that you can plan on dropping tree hundred bucks every couple months on a new 1/8 set up, i mean realy? i thought i had this thing sorted out? silly me

NO definitely now. Of course there have been those who have had one problem after another, but in the end alot of it was due to a faulty system setup that killed one ESC after another. Some have just received bad electronics from the start, but that is rare. Not sure of exactly what your setup situation was, but all we can tell you is to make sure that when you go to hook up your next setup to the ESC that all of your connections are perfect and not touching anything metal on your chassis, tranny, or whatever so as to avoid any dead shorts. Most have pretty good luck with the electrics as long as you are compitent about putting your system together. It never hurts to have a second set of eyes(R/C knowledgable) look at your setup as well. Sorry to hear of your misfortune and better luck next go around.

Doug what was your HV setup??? What problems were you having with that??
And speedys fail all the time, my G3R went through 6 speedys, 3 MMMs 2 MGMs and one quark. At least with castle you can send it off and get warranty or replacement fairly easy. When i sent the MGMs off to get repaired the turn around was about 3 months. And it still failed when i got it back. Try and gear for 40mph as a standard and work from there. My advice to you would be to invest (if you have not already) In an eagle tree system and that way you can see exactly what is happening. Electrics are funny things

mm failure - 03.31.2010, 02:44 AM

to respond about my expirence level ive been raceing for about 12 years and i do have a good grasp of the subject but these 1/8 scale systems seem to be inmature and less dependable in comparison to the 1/10 stuff.I cant think of too many folks that run 1/8 E and havent smoked multiple components. I mean if any other form of consumer electronics were this prone to failure they would be out of work in no time.Im not picking on castle, im picking on novak,LRP,tekin, speed passion, and all the other crap thats been offered up as state of the art 1/8 systems and i happen to think very highly of castle and novaks 1/18 and1/10 setups but when a set up goes at my home track ,nine out of ten times its one of the" state of the art" 1/8 systems.ive got a GTB thats not been touched in three years, a momba max pro over a year, and castle1/18 that stood up to three years before it tanked . anyway ,sorry about all the pissing and whinning .just needed that off my chest im tapped out and shoudnt keep doing this butt i will

well have you seen the abuse these systems take? not to mention the sheer power that is traveling through them, they all fail sooner or later you have to expect it somewhat

I have to agree to a point, they do take a lot of abuse, but some companies out there don't exactly rate their products well in terms of the amp department. I have found it best to either go with the good products that give exceptional customer service so that repairs are fixed promptly and without question (castle) or to spend the money on the high end stuff that has been proven to take the abuse time and time again ie schulze

Has anyone tried one of these???

I may just be one of the lucky ones, but I am still on my original mmm on it's third race season. And by no means do I pamper it, I drive it like I stole it!
Do you use a double layer of servo tape under the esc?

1/8Esystems rant - 03.31.2010, 11:11 AM

agreed, the stuff has to put up with a lot of abuse my point is still valid. If you had any class of consumer electronics failing at the rate this stuff fails people would be screaming bloody murder. To Castles credit they do a great job in cos tumer service and from what ive seen there stuff holds up better than most, butt i only get out to run once or twice aweek and my impresions are that about one in three trips out someone frys a system and 80 or 90% of the time its a 1/8 setup that had been running fine. ive never heard off the system mentioned inyour thread butt ill look into it

I use the single layer of tape on my MMM and the bracket that holds them down on the erevo. My schulze i use two velcro strips and than two straps just to make sure.

my mounting method - 03.31.2010, 11:18 AM

this last set up i chose to use a drop of shoe goo,its flexable and less likely to come undone by heat

Another thought, most esc failures I believe are due to the impact from hard landings, and the longevity of my mmm could be in part due to the battery/esc trays that I have used. Both have had a semi floating esc tray at the rear of the battery tray. (Losi and Monster Mikes)

No question they fail from shock. Shock absorbtion should be a point when mounting those suckers IMO. Blown speedos suck.
