HYPERION EOS0610I DUO II-DUAL PORT and My new PC Power Supply MOD. Questions! - 08.08.2009, 03:38 AM

So now that i have finished the Power Supplly, I notice on the HYPERION EOS0610I DuoII that the manual says the following:

It is critically important that you use either a fully charged 12V~24V lead-acid automobile battery (or better, deep-cycle marine battery) - or a high quality AC-DC power supply in the range of 12V to 28V DC output, with minimum current rating of 10A. When charging high voltage batteries at high current (charger output 360W) the AC/DC Power Supply (PS) should be 15V minimum with rating of 350W or more, to insure reliable performance. Note that PS load control features DO allow you to use lower-rated power supplies reliably, but that total charger output wattage will be limited accordingly. (See details later in this manual).

I measured the Voltage on the 2 Leads that are coming out of my charger, and they read 12.05V. Now unless im reading this wrong is my Power Supply not going to be enough? Or does the Charger pull from the Power Supply and cause the Voltage to increase along with the amperage?

Also there is a menu setting that asks what the Power Supply Voltage is Amperage ETC.. I am really lost with this charger, i am not sure what needs to be set, before i start charging packs. HELP!

Well i have been messing around with the charger and reading some of the manual, I think im getting the hang of it. As far as the settings are concerned under the USER settings. there are some areas that i have questions about. I set the INPUT VOLTAGE to 12v because my PS was showing 12.05 or so when i measured it. (i did notice tho that it would drop to 11.702 often while charging some packs @ 2C) should i set the Voltage lower or leave at 12v? Next according to the PS it able to do 22AMPS i set this for 20AMPS to give some head room, IS THIS OK? How will i know if im pushing the PS to hard? TIPS POINTERS? thanks again everyone for the help with this project.

Hey Man,
Im more of a computer tech than an rc guy so this is my kind of area,
Your powersupply should be fine, the reason they say higher voltages should be used whilst charging at higher rates is to keep the amps down. To have a higher wattage we can do one of two things, increase the voltage or increase the amps. More amps is more heat usually and as a result we can increase the voltage to improve efficiency. Your charger will adapt to the lower voltage and just up the amps slighty, it will run hotter but will NOT be a problem.

The voltage is fine, all power supplies will ripple the voltage slightly under load, this is called the voltage drop, or load drop. I would leave the charger at 12v because the powersupply will be at 12v most of the time or atleast very close. The poorer quality the Powersupply the more voltage drop there will be. Just leave it at 12v.

Your powersupply has 1 22 amp 12v rail. This means it can supply 22amps at 12v safely. You could set it at 22 amps on the charger however your idea with the safety margin will mean that the powersupply has a safe barrier. If it over currents it shuts off, no harm is done but you would interrupt your charging cycle.
Hope I Helped
James

yes it helps alot thanks. The PSU that i am using is not a cheap one, its an ANTECH, which i know is top of the line in psu's. i myself am a computer guy. thanks

HI Guys, I've got 2 venom 2s1p 5000mah 20c's, I charge them with a onyx by duratrax, seems to charge them great, nice and balanced.but there is no balance plug on the charger, It balances w/o plugging the batts bal plug in. I always check them w/ my three different bal boards "Blinky,Smartbalancer, and AEORC celDaig X6" I am gettin close to completing my MMM 3905 Revo conversion, round 2 and sprung for a couple Hyperion 4s paks. the balance plug is diff? the Hyperion chargers show the bal plug plugged in... Im very confused. please tell me I dont need a new charger too.
