And Roar Does it again - 05.09.2010, 04:24 PM

Quote:
The ROAR Executive Committee, Electric Section Chairperson, and Consultation with its Industry Affiliate Manufacturers, have compiled a listing of electronic speed controllers (ESC) for use in ROAR sportsman racing programs.

Speed Controllers eligible for Sportsman Class racing must be capable of providing ZERO Timing Advance along with disabling Advanced Motor Control Functions (i.e. Boost, Cheat Mode, Turbo, SuperCharge, etc).

When the “sportsman” profile is enabled, the ESC shall indicate the profile by a unique LED (constant or blinking) while the ESC is “armed” and in neutral position. The unique visual identification detail will be published along with the ESC listing of approved products.

ESC manufacture affiliates have been working with the ROAR Section Committees to develop the sportsman ESC definitions and update firmware to meet the class standard. Firmware in the latest advanced speed control products must provide a profile, which allows its use to comply with sportsman ESC profile requirements.

Several affiliates are working on firmware updates which will allow additional ESC’s to be added. Members should contact the manufacturer directly for firmware updates or questions regarding any ESC they wish to have added to the ROAR sportsman approved ESC listing.

I don't see what the big deal is. The big names will be putting out firmware that locks down the timing, and you can switch at the push of a button. Everyone is complaining that they just wasted a bunch of money on controllers they can't use when this isn't the case. And if you want to go balls out fast then race in mod. Isn't the whole idea of sportsman to be an easier and more level playing field for people to learn on?

yeah, all the good controllers are PC update-able anyway.

think the castle mmpro has an un-used LED too. i know my CC ICE 100 has an un-used LED for use in any future purpose.

And yet again why I say my theory that Novak has a really big foot in the door when it comes to ROAR rules. They want ROAR to cater to them so they actually have a chance of winning. My guess is that the Mamba Max Pro would be mopping the floor with the Novak systems in big races if it weren't for rules like this.

This is just one reason of many why I hate Novak, and while my theory may not be true, I'd be willing to bet money that it is.

Did anyone else see where ROAR has a bunch of rules against the new cab-forward design truggy bodies and now against the new cab-foward buggy bodies? They say that they want to keep the 1/8 buggy and truggy class looking somewhat realistic, but since when has a 1/8 buggy looked even that close to the real deal.... I am into desert racing and know damn well that the only RC classes that looks similar to real desert buggies these days would be the 1/10 2wd buggy class. Hell even most 2wd ST's lost their realistic looks long ago. The other would be the SC trucks, but technically they are meant to look like the real deal from day 1, buggies and truggies were not. If they want scale, go to the crawler guys, not 1/8 offroad.

I'm proudly not a member of ROAR.

Novak has timing advance on their ESCs now, too - I doubt this is a "Novak" rule or conspiracy against any manufacturer, but rather an example of ROAR trying to level the playing field. I agree in principle with ROAR, but I seldom agree with their actual practice or "solution". The cab forward body thing is just plain stupid(show me a 1:1 truggy so we know what it looks like!), as is limiting batteries to a 4s pack in 1/8 electric classes(plenty more dumb rules, too).

The closest thing I know of to a 1:1 truggy would be a crawler, certainly not an off road racer type vehicle. I agree in that I don't think roar is siding with anyone on this issue, but I do wonder why.

Makes me proud of my track for not supporting ROAR rules!

I thought that same thing too when I heard about one of the new Proline buggy bodies was banned because it wasn't realistic enough. How is it supposed to be realistic when these vehicles don't exist in real life at full scale!

I dont have a problem with it. I really think it will make the racing closer. I ran 17.5 Bl last season and you really could tell a big difference with the trucks that ran timing advance esc's compared to ones that didn't.

I normally run a tekin rs so it didn't matter to me. I just kept getting the newest software but really its not far to ones on a budget or kids trying to compete in the same class.

I do agree with Mike about the 4s thing in 8th scale though. I actually went down to 4s this year to be roar legal but really prefer my old 6s setup.
