waterproofing a castle creations esc - 04.01.2010, 09:13 AM

Brian, or any other castle tech support, can you please explain to everyone about the current situation with waterproofing techniques and why they are bad. when i called customer support someone explained to me why both plastic dip and corrosion x are bad to do, but i don't remember every detail of what he told me, and many people are interested in/trying to do these methods.

also can you tell us (as i was told) about castles current development of a waterproof esc? i was told that the esc's are already water resistant, due to something put on the esc at the factory, but that traxxas has asked castle to try to develop a waterproof esc the size of the monster. is this true? if it is how soon can we expect to see it on market?

thanks, any help in this would be much appreciated, as i know MANY of us want to drive our trucks through mud and water without worrying about popping our expensive esc's.

The current techniques ( plastidip & similar ) are bad because they make it impossible to work on the esc ( forms a hard layer of plastic or resin type substance over the components making it impossible to solder/ desolder them ), should it need sending in for whatever reason. For that reason, and because opening up the esc for any other reason than to replace the fan, water proofing = warrenty void.

If castle are working on a 100% waterproof/sealed esc vs the water resistant MMM, then they most likely cant and wont comment until its time to release it- pretty standard practice these days with new r/c products.

I have heard a guy say that he used liquid latex ( masking fluid ) to waterproof his esc, and since it can be peeled off very easily & in one piece ( prior to sending it in for servicing ), it is feasable to waterproof the esc and not void the warrenty, but thats a grey area at best.

A truelly waterproof esc would need a sealed case like the vxl esc- not impossible with a little redesign work, just needs space for an o-ring between the case and heatsink ( to prevent moisture entering that area, and between the case halfs, then wont grommets to seal the various wires as they exit the esc case ( vs the current larger opening and vents etc ).

I wouldnt want to work on an old diesel engine that had been tampered with. There are plenty of other routes other than making a mess of your esc.Semi-waterproof esc box doesnt effect your warranty. mmmmmmmm

Sometime ago i was repairing my brother´s nikko RC toy car. And i found that all the electronics where dipped is something like paraffin. I had to resolder wire and i was able to do it trough it ...

Some waxes have a melting point suitable to survive the working temperature of a MMM and yet allow to melt it without desoldering a component or even soldering trough it...

this guys should have a suitable wax..

running your truck through mud and stuff is SUPER fun but gets old quick after you realise all the stuff that gets ruined, BB's get all clogged with slush, sometimes rust up, surface rust of all kinds of stuff, plastic bushings seizing up from fine dirt particles.

but i agree, i'd like to see a waterproof CASE for the EXISTING monster!!

E-revo 3.3 conversion, 249kv outrunner, 6s, MMM
the porthole from the noob world an here has been opened!! that's how i got in.

Plasti-dip can be peeled off with out leaving any residue. At least from my experience. However if I ruined the MMM I would be happy to take responsibility since I altered it. I have also seen some successful using a micro lubricant called Corrosion-X. However like I said, once I did this, I knew that I would take the responsibility if anything happens.
