Mini E-revo 1/16 MM 5700kv Build/Review -
08.11.2009, 12:51 PM
Guys, I post on a few other forums so I just copied and pasted from my other threads. I posted my build on here with a Neu 1112 and couldnt help but try the 540 conversion. Anyways, here are my thoughts. Pics will come tonight when I get off work:
TENBOL MOUNT - I give this mount a thumbs up. It's pretty light and nicely machined. The customer service there is great. I installed it last week and ran into a problem where the mount would rub against my 55t spur. Shot them an email and they machined me one and sent it to me the next day! That's great service! So now I have an updated version of the mount that allows larger spurs. My gripes: the motor sits high with a lot of space under. This maybe so there is space to mount the ESC or receiver without hitting the side of the can. It would be nice if it could have been a few mm lower as the COG is raised considerably. Another thing is mounting holes. It would be nice if there was some mounting holes for 380 motors. I know this is for a 540 motor, but what about us that want to use a Neu 11xx or some other 380 with a longer can? Maybe something to think about Tenbol. You also have to raise your body posts to get the body to fit nicely. Either way good job and nice mount!
540 MOTOR: I picked the MM and 5700kv combo. For those that follow my threads on the other forums, I bought the MM used from a guy that said "practically brand new" and the thing came in beat-up and dirty. Anyways, I'm hoping there's nothing wrong with it. I upgraded the firmware to the latest one so it seems to be working fine. The 5700kv is used too but looks to be running good. For 2s I had about a 20min run before I got tired and stopped. I reached 105 on the motor and 115 on the ESC. NOT BAD! My setup weighs a little over 3lbs on 2s and almost 3.3lbs on 3s. With this weight the conversion pushed the mini around pretty well with minimal heat. I have it geared at 55/31 so it wasnt a speed demon at 2s.
My mini feels like a brick when I have both 3s in. This was my 1st run with the conversion and I was not impressed. With this setup I should have been geared at around 73mph. Sure didnt feel like it. After about 10 minutes of running I called it quits. Good thing. I temped both ESC and motor at 160+. WHY? I dont get it. I got this setup so everything would run cool with monster torque when I needed it. It was definitely hotter than I expected. And it sure didnt seem much faster than the Neu 1112 I had before this 540 conversion. Impressive? Not really. My Neu 1112 felt a lot faster. One thing I did notice was that the 5700kv didnt have the cog resistance when I turned the shaft, compared to the Neu which the cog from the magnets were so strong I could barely turn the shaft. This is a good thing. I freewheeled easily and it was easy to control on jumps. BUT the jumps were not nice. Bottomed out every single time and it does not sound healthy... especially for a mini that weighs 3+ pounds. At least I managed not to flip the mini over once. But the reason to that you'll read about below.
CONCLUSION - I'm a little disappointed. The power isnt much of a difference over my Neu 1112 380-size motor. The extra weight I definitely do not welcom. Not to knock Tenbol. Their mount is great. But for those with Neu 11xx already, it's really not worth it to go 540. My 2 cents. For speed runs this is cool. This is your perfect setup. But for bashing and racing I'd stick with a 380 size motor. There's a lot of weight and suspension sag with the 540 motor on there. The MM and a 380 motor seem to be the right balance for power and ability to fine tune. It might be a different story if it would run cooler on 3s. OH, not to mention MAJOR COGGING! This was cogging bad. I cant believe how bad the cogging is. It's horrible. I'm picking up a new MM and 5700kv combo just incase the ones I have are defective.
ADDITIONAL INFO - I am running Hyperion G3 VX lipos. 2s 1800mah and 3s 1600mah both ran in parallel. YOU CANNOT JUST RUN 1 PACK. You must have 2 packs in parallel as the amp draw is way up there. My 1st run my battery got hot! Was a lot better when I used 2 in parallel.
I also forgot to mention I have a center diff and a wheel/tire combo that makes my mini 2 inches wider than stock. That's probably the only reason why I didnt flip it over on the turns. That's also the reason I wasnt doung backflips and wheelies. The CD pretty much eliminated it, not to mention my NewEra wheelie bar.
That's my 2 cents. I'd like to hear some feedback from other people that have theirs setup as well.
