late to the 2wd game, what truck to buy

ok, i know i'm darn late to this. I want to race short course this season as i have no monster truck class in so oregon. (poor g2r is now shelf queen).

I bought a slash to apease a friend with a short course track. however, i'm tired of his whining and unwillingness to change or upgrade or even spend a dollar. I like to hop things up logically. Now i wanna be competitve at our local track (rpm hobbies medford OR). Seems like when i ask for advice locally it isn't always logical but seems to result in imenent sales for shops. ie i want the very best 2wd short course i can afford, not just what they have in stock. I'd rather not go rtr route as i don't want to replace everything from start. i know i wanna go brushless and gear it for track, so i don't care about doing 50 mph or whatnot. I want a track only vehicle. I've always been associated guy, and am somewhat satisfied with my brushless slash. how are the blitz, kyosho, sc10 trucks. Pros and Cons please,

Medford, nice! im originally from grants pass but am in Klamath Falls for school, only raced the track there once, pretty nice though.

What what I've seen, a Slash with the right setup is VERY hard to beat. I've read alot of reviews and a Slash with the Proline shocks and suspension setup are supposed to be one of the best handling setups out there. That would be my route for sure. As for motor/esc, I'd go MMP most likely and a Neu 1512. As for tires, I'd say 1/8 is the best way to go, but some tracks don't allow them.

i'd go for the hpi blitz ese.

the blitz is much lighter than the slash and needs less motor to get it going good. runtimes and temps are better as well. i'm using a cheapo ezrun 12t 3300kv motor (380 sized) on 3s and it temps at 120-140F on 3s geared 19/88

all you would have to do to get it race-worthy is get better tires and you are good to go.

At my local track, an hour away, the hot ticket seems to be the Blitz. However I too am an associated fan and just bought a SC10 RTR last week. I talked to the top racer at the track and he said that alot of people are running the blitz right now but the SC10 is the next most popular truck. Naturally if 8 out of 10 people are running a Blitz it winds up winning more races. I'll keep my sc10 though!

+1 on the SC10, although I have never raced a Blitz I hear they are good as well. I was just at a race this weekend and was supposed to run in stock slash but that class didnt run due to lack of entries, so I was bumped to open CORR. I ran my RTR SC10 which is bone stock, threw on a set of calibers and a GTB with Orion 10.5 (on 2s) and ran in the open class. With the class being open everyone but one other person was running a 4wd corr truck jammin, ofna, slash 4x4, etc. . I managed to qualify 2nd in the B main (I'm not that great of a driver), by the end of the first lap I was in first and steadily pulling away from the field, I had a well over 12 second lead by mid race and finished on my own lap. No one could believe that I was out there with a basically stock 2wd truck and pulling away from people, my sc10 was just on rails it was running geat, so I would highly recommend it. Note this was also an 1/8 scale track with some pretty big air and I didnt break a thing on the sc10 all weekend.

If I needed something today I would get a blitz. If I could wait a little bit I would wait for the sc10 factory team or the blitz ese.

this is why i love this site, all kinds of answers and none of them bad. keep em comin guys. So i've sold a bunch of revo parts today so i got some cash to unload on this project. Being the Vain moron i am, i quickly went out and bought a j-concepts manta sc body. Still don't know which way i'm gonna go yet so i appreciate all the input.
kinda sounding like sc10 = 6 and Blitz = half dozen
probably bump my slash back to stock for that class alone
i was drooling over the FT SC10 except for the june(which means later) release date.

I had a Slash over a year ago, tough as nails but the handleing and COG was left to be desired. I've seen good drivers with the Proline upgrade and WOW what a great handleing truck it turned into !
I currently own a SC10 and run 1/8 buggy wheels with Caliber M3's with a Velineon and M.M. on 2s. I can get 35minutes from a 5000mah pack. Handles awesome, jumps well etc etc. I've always had T4's so I naturally took the SC10's format and enjoy it thoroughly.
I bought my buddy a Blitz for his birthday and he can't drive worth a shizz but that blitz goes where he points it ! I have driven it myself and was highly impressed with it in stock form. The ESE would be the bomb I'd bet ?

Thanks, I was kinda proud of myself considering I'm not a great driver and haven't had much practice time in the last year or so. The SC10 just seems to fit my driving style perfectly.

I would also recommend the Factory Team SC10 if you can wait, but as you mentioned it will probably be mid summer before they are readily available. I would be interested in trying a blitz as I keep hearing really great things about them handling and durability wise. Although my SC10 ran on an 1/8 scale track all weekend and didn't break one part, I did bend a camber link in practice when I got run into by an 1/8 e-buggy going over a table top, but we bent it straight on pit road and it was fine ever since. The only changes I made to the truck were putting a basic setup on it that I got off of AE's site and cleaned the grease out of the rear diff and filled with 40wt shock oil and a squirt of 2000wt diff oil. Other than that I didnt touch it.

Sorry I forgot to congraduate you on doing so well with the 4WD guys.

Your diff mod, how has it helped compared to the black grease, very curious ?

I actually have some video footage of the race, I'll see if I can post it up somewhere tonight, you can see how the truck ran (and my lousy driving ).

The diff mod seemed to help quite a bit, I may go to a thicker oil yet as it seemed to still wanted to diff out under acceleration and spin out if I got on it just a fraction too quick. I found info on what to use on RCTech, I may try it again and add a little more of the 2000wt diff oil and a little less shock oil. I was def. smoother than the grease. Or I may just go the ball diff route and not have to worry about it.

i've heard good things about the pro-line slash stuff out there. my only question with it is if the wheels are not readily available ? as i understand it once you go the pro-line susp package you have to use those wheels, could i use adapters for 1/8 buggy wheel/tires with their package? it seems like it could limiting. Anywho all slashes aside, i think i'm waiting for the BLITZ ESE. This is seeming so logical. If i could i would do a blitz ese and a
FTSC10 with the same electronics.

IMO,there is NO best 2WD sc truck-they all have their good and bad points.If
I had to choose one that comes close to being the ideal choice,I would nominate the HPI BLITZ.It is almost as well balanced as the AE SC10,fairly low center of gravity and is nearly as tough as the Slash 2WD.The stock Maxxis tires are a good starting point for use on a variety of surfaces.As far as B/L motor/esc combos are concerned,I like to stay in the 3000kv-5000kv range for the motor and an ESC no less than 60 AMPS.I have a few S/C trucks and they are listed here.
2WD:
Slash 2WD=Xcelorin 4800kv motor/EZrun 80amp ESC/Proline Split Six/Bowties.
AE SC10=VXL 3500kv combos/stock wheels and tires.
AE SC10=XErun 3200kv sensored motor/60amp ESC/stock wheels and tires.
HPI Blitz=Xcelorin 4800kv motor/EZrun 80amp ESC/stock wheels and tires.
ALL are run on 6000mah 30c 2s hardcase Lipos.
4WD:
Slash 4X4=stock.

Hobao Hyper 10 SC=Novak HV PRO 6.5T combo/stock wheels and tires.
Hobao Hyper 10 SC=Mamba Max 4600kv combo/stock wheels and tires.
If you want an all round motor/ESC combo,the VXL 3500kv combo is as good a starting point as any.The info is only based on my own personal experiences and what has worked for me.

Anyone been around the Kyosho Ultima? I have been hearing good things about it.. I am in the same boat.. I have the urge I want to buy something.. I have a brushless slash which I might just revamp some with the pro line suspension.. There is a local guy with a brushless blitz and dx3s for 350 that I had thought about buying.. So many choices..
