Asian typhoon. -
09.01.2010, 10:58 AM
Well it is just about midnight here in Korea and we are sitting here watching the CNN news amazed that there are presently 6 major storms being tracked around the globe. Three Typhoons in Asia, and three huricanes in the Atlantic heading for the East Coast USA. We are now awaiting a Typhoon to hit us head on within the next 12 to 24 hours carrying winds upwards to 100mph, and expecting to drop approx 8" of rain in a very short time. Flooding is eminent. Our schools have already been closed by the base commander and a notice was posted that anyone caught on the streets after 0300 would be picked up by the military police due to curfew. The rains are just starting in the downtown Seoul area but not much wind yet. I am charging up all of our batteries and taking advatage of watching the news, and being on the internet while we are still able to get on line while the power is still up. When storms hit here it is much like the storm that tore through Dade County in Florida ten years ago, because Korea is much like the Florida peninsula. We are hoping for it to pass quickly and without doing too much damage in our area. Wish us luck. We are hoping that Hurricane Earl will skim up the coast and out to sea without creating too much havoc on that side of the world. Then we all have to get ready for the next set of storms.

Good luck man, hopefully it won't do too much damage.thankfully the biggest storm I have ever had to deal with was an F2 tornado, and it would seem like a picnic compared to a hurricane!--Josh

I lived through some crazy hurricanes when I lived in the Philippines. The power they demonstrate is incredible.
Good luck with everything!

Hurricane eva 1980-84 -
09.01.2010, 11:40 AM
I was stationed in Hawaii in the early 80's when Hurricane Eva came through. I was on call due to security issues at a top secret command at the time, and I got called in right in the middle of it because the 20' high voltage fence blew down in 140mph winds. I had to drive to work in teh middle of it to hook my truck up to the fence and pull it back up so I could tie it off on a tree until things calmed down, and on the way back home a two car garage blew accross the road right in front of me. It devistated the Haiwaian Islands. Then in 2004 my wife and I were stuck in a resort near Disney World when two seperate hurricanes crossed paths right where we were staying. I have had the pleasure of riding out quite a few storms in my lifetime. All I ever hope for is to get through it safely and without injury.
Things are really begining to whip it up around here now. Nearly 1AM and I am going to try to get a few hours of sleep. Check with you guys in the morning.

Good luck Jerry. Hurricane Earl is headed for us here in Massachusetts, Cape Cod where I live, so I feel for your concern. What sucks is my job will keep me from being with my family when it hits. I have been scrambling to secure house, bring in furniture, buy food, etc...before Friday.

Devastation. -
09.02.2010, 07:51 AM
WE'RE STILL HERE. Belive it or not the strom was quite frightening, but we are still alive and well. Our housing area got hit hard. We lost about half of the trees and several of them are resting on houses, but no injuries or deaths that we know of. We have a very large tree down in our backyard, but it layed down in a way where all it damaged is our cable and internet lines. Still here we are. The base commander shut down power at 0500 this morning as the storm was coming assure to avoid any electricusions or any other issues that would require emergency recovery. The eye wall came assure just south of us over the Inchon international airport, and ripped across the peninsula leaving quite a bit of damage to clean up. Things are quite hectic around here right now, but they expect to have things back to normal here within the next 24 to 36 hours. Power came up about a half hour ago, so we are all on line trying to update our friends while we can. Who knows how long it might last. The wife & I woke up early and watched most of the action from our front door, and luckily the kids slept right through the whole thing. By the time they got up it was just about done with, so we took a drive around the base to check things out. It looked like a disaster movie scene. We are shocked yet pleased that they were able to get power up so quickly. Honestly we expected it to be out for a few days. We just broke out the grill and had a burger & dog night here with the kids. We just told them that we were camping IN for the night.
Looks like we should be good to go by noon tomorrow. The fire department just came around door to door sharing info through a printed report and update for everyone on base services and a schedule for recovery. Pretty cool actually. So now we are wondering what is going on with Hurricane Earl moving up the East Coast. We do not have cable so no news updates.
