To Slash 4x4 or not to Slash 4x4, that is the question..... - 12.28.2010, 01:39 AM

Allright, my OCD is driving me bat ass crazy trying to decide if I should or should not buy a Slash 4x4 Ultimate to complement my already awesome Savage Flux that I love dearly.

The problem is that with me free time when im not working with my job and trying to get over my rebound with a failed 5 year relationship, I really need to get off the computer and xbox and get outside to take my mind of thinking about stuff.

I've been struggling with what I could do to help fill up my free time. I've been thinking about a Slash 4x4 for some time before this. In case you didn't know, I ABSOLUTELY HATE getting my Flux wet or muddy. I'm just genetically built to be anal about my things and I hate having to clean up my stuff from running in wet weather no matter how much fun is. It also doesn't help that the Flux isn't a cheap RC vehicle and wasn't designed to handle wet driving conditions.

I've been watching vids of Slash 4x4 in snow, rain, puddles for months now on youtube and im pretty impressed with the durability of the electronics and amazingly enough, the truck itself under sever driving conditions. The fact that the Slash 4x4 is designed to be waterproof makes me more willing to "push the envelope" with one vs with my Flux.

However, I still have a poor taste in my mouth with Traxxas products after my Revo 3.3 nearly 4 years ago. The thing was a complete PITA to work on as well as just being unreliable in all area's, especially diffs and quality. I basically all but swore off ever buying a traxxas product again after that.

But after not only seeing how popular and insanely fast the Slash and SC market has become in the last few years, this weekend I got to watch my guys at the LHS drive around a Slash 4x4 along with two blitz and and a 2wd Slash in our cold weather conditions and in the snow on a small track. I was simply amazed at how freaking fast, agile and smooth the Slash 4x4 zipped along the icy track, it almost like poetry in motion, epecially in comparison to the 2wd SC trucks.

Anyway, i'm almost ready to pull a $475 good or bad idea. I"m a sucker for having all the bling and upgrades out the box, so I want the 4x4 Ultimate but I have a few questions just to make sure I really wanna do this.

1. What are some absolute durability upgrades I should do to the Slash 4x4? I do wanna jump and bash with the thing in a variety of conditions. I already want to purchase an outerwears cover for the chassis to help keep crud out, but what else should I do besides RPM arms to strengthen the Slash to help bash like my Flux can?

2. What are some particular weak spots of the Traxxas Slash 4x4 I need to be aware of that may end up costing me out of my pocket more then I planned? I"m used to the bullet proof toughness of my Flux and I dunno if a Slash 4x4 can make me happy in that area. Am I expecting to much outa of a Traxxas product and or a Short course truck?

Thanks all for helping me make an informed decision on this.

I have no idea why these SC trucks have gotten so popular. IMHO they are kinda boring. If i was you i would go with the 4x4 Stampede. I remember somewhere you were saying you hated 8th scale buggies because they need smooth ground to run on....well dont you think these SC trucks are the same thing? except they are 10th scale with a big truck body.

One of the guys at the recent meet had a Stampede 4x4. I honestly wasn't that impressed. I'd rather not drive my Flux during wet conditions then buy a tiny Stampede.

Yes, it is. With WAY more grip.

Honestly, the slash has enough trouble on a loose dirt surface due to the very little grip the tiny tires provide, I can't imagine how loose the whole truck would be in snow. I'd say Stampede 4x4 all the way, the only thing I see SC trucks useful for are for racing on groomed track surfaces. If you wanted to drop more money I'd say E-Maxx or E-Revo, or if you wanted to drop almost nothing just waterproof your Savage and have at it.

to be honest, you may be where i was a year ago. the videos easily keep you excited about getting one. i kind of obsessed about it until i did get the truck. after driving my first pack thru it i had some complaints right away. they were big enough that i just lost it for the truck. it wasn't the trucks fault at all, it just didn't do it for me. i guess for me it was too close to fitting where a 1/8th buggy would go in my collection, only its not one. i guess with the right area to drive and maybe some other owners to drive with i would have enjoyed it more, but as a basher it wasn't worth keeping and this would go for the sc truck of any manufacture

Get another flux, one for good weather (your current one), and one stock for beating the crap out of in bad weather.

i have a 4x4 slash and i love it, the only upgrades it has needed was tekno cvds and kings heads motor mount, other than that its nearly bullet proof with any 540/550 sized motor.

Slash 4x4 or 2x4 will suit you just fine. To be honest freeze I don't think there is a RC that you can truly bash. Your ocd will kick in and you will see the faults in the thing modify it and then be in the same scenario you are in now. Even if you start with a dirt cheap Brushed Stampede 2x4 you would most likely turn it into a awesome machine that you would grow fond of and never want to abuse.

The thing you need to do is just let go. You sound like your pretty well off financially seeing as you blew a lot of money building that Flux in such short time. So, with that being said just bash the Freeze. When it breaks of gets damaged that enjoyment you got from building it will come back more and more.

Either way to each his own. I just want you to one day realize the enjoyment of the I don't give a F, I will get this thing off that 30' drop in one piece.

Maybe one day you'll take a trip to Reno and I'll let you feel that enjoyment.

You could also buy a flux roller, get the twin motor mount from KD, and run a twin VXL setup, balloon up the reciever and servo, and have care-free fun!

I agree here, powerfull and water proof, no worrys ?

I have 2 4wd Slashes and absolutelt love them but I dont see you being happy with a themFreezy ?.
Your expectations are very high and like mentioned prior, the Slashes really shine best on a track IMO.

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.

Buy a slash 4x4 if thats what you want to do....the only upgrades mine has is a king heads motor mount and rpm arms....

This truck takes and amazing amount of abuse...the only thing i've ever actually broke from bashing is one stock rear carrier and that was from driving it 30 feet up a tree and having it fall and land on one back wheel

I would be willing to put money down that my slash 4x4 would out bash your flux
