Rant - 01.26.2011, 09:45 PM

Alright, I am sick of the war against lead. I'm particularity tired of the war against lead based solder. Lead solder is the best, easiest to use solder of all time. It is not a danger to anyone used properly. I have seen any number of lead based solders banned or discontinued, including Dean's Silver Pro Flux solder, discontinued due to the irrational fear of lead. If you eat a bunch of lead continuously over a long length of time, it will hurt you. This is true of all most anything. Used properly, lead is a great addition to many products and hurts no one. I grew up with lead based paint on my crib and walls. Leaded gasoline. No problems here, Common sense needs to rule the day, not irrational fears based on ingesting huge amounts of lead daily. All based on animal studies of mice consuming HUGE amounts of lead daily in non-realistic experiments.
OK, end of rant.
And yes, I have been drinking. In this case, Bacardi 151 Rum. My opinion will still be the same when I am sober in the morning.

I was just reading today in my local paper that as of 1/1/2011, Washing state has banned the use of lead wheel weights. So now we will have ugly rusting steel weights on our wheels, that of course are more expensive and of course will be passed on to the consumer. They say that lost wheel weights that have fallen off of wheels are polluting the air and water......WTF?

Our government just wants all the Lead for themselves to make sure their nuclear bunkers are properly shielded...

Armadillo helmets can shield against even the most sophisticated brain wave scanners.

I agree on the lead based solder, I found some at a really old plumbing shop and bought all they had left in stock. I found some stuff so old the box was falling apart and layed in dust. Stuff works awesome !
I have a small fan that sucks the fumes and smoke away from while I solder, I'm brain damageded enough to not need any more.

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.

agreed. I've fixed enough 360's to know how why leadfree solder stucks...plus, I like my solder connections looking shiny.

are you guys on the mainland all having trouble finding leaded solder? our local Home Depot still stocks both leaded and RoHS compliant electronic solders.

Same with Mercury. They shut the schools down now if a old thermometer gets broken, like it was Anthrax.
