Total Capacitance? - 02.27.2012, 03:19 PM

Hey,

Anyone know what the capacitance ratings on the MMMXLv2 are?

And what about the Ratings on the Castle Cap pack?

Trying to work out what resistor i would need for no spark connection...

Thanks guys!

You dont need an resistor, the spark especially with 6s is not that bad.
on 8s your getting an smal "bang" but it will take a long time before it will ruin any connectors.

Maybe we're just scaredy cats!

From what I could tell the cap pack was 880uf total, the esc had 2 * 680uf that I could see.

I'd love a clear answer on what resistor to use as well. I have a 1 ohm 10 watt in there now but it looks friggin huge. I've seen one post where Patrick has said 1 ohm 5 watt, but that was for 6s? Even that resistor is fairly big, it does your head in doesn't it?

i run my 5b conversion around a lot of petrol bajas, with all the flammable liquids around i would rather not have the 8s crack and spark when starting up... just to be on the safe side... Plus the big scary spark makes me scared

FB5b, it certainty does do my head in... i was looking at 5ohm 10 watt and their monsters! i would love to have a definitive value,

so thats, 4x220uf on the cap pack, and 2x 680uf on the MMMXLv2?

according to brians calculator i will require a 45ohm, 20watt resistor to charge caps in half a second...

that seems CRAZY high?

Man, you guys are a bunch of woosies.

I too use resistors, but only because I use 16-22S on my bike. I just use a pair of 1 Ohm/1W resistors in parallel. Small enough and no sparks. BTW, my bike has a like 19 caps.

I dont think deans connector will last very long on 8s "sparks", but bullet will be ok, as it will only hit the edge and it have bigger contact area.

Guess its better to use resistor, but not really needed.

You also might damage the ESC if the 45 ohm resistor is connected when the ESC beeps the motor...

Just use 1 ohm. It works fine.

Thanx!

Ok simple Q time for people like Bazzokajoe and myself

If I run a MMMXL2 with a Cap Pack for a Baja and 2028 Castle Motor, on 6-8s Lipo we should use a no spark resistor of ________ ohm and _________ watt.

Don't need casual theorizing, just someone to fill in the blanks so we can go to radioshack and get the right resistor to hook in. Why is it so hard?

at present I am at 22 ohm, 1 watt.

My calc simply displays the charge levels and power over time given the data entered. This is more for those who want more info. But, there is a section on that page that flat out tells you a general resistor to use for those who just want an easy blanket answer.

So, to reiterate; if you want those blanks filled, just follow Patrick's advice and use a 1 ohm, 5 watt resistor. Just be aware that as capacitance is increased, the charge time will increase (will be less than 1 sec unless capacitance is crazy high) and as voltage is increased, the resistor may get toasty so don't hold on to it.
