1520 enough motor for 1/5-1/6 scale cen nemesis? - 03.10.2012, 04:55 AM

Greetings rc monster crew, I want to start by saying that I think this forum is fantastic and I'm very excited to be here. :0)

I'm building an XL cen gst/nemesis, It's about 26-27 inches long, wheelbase 19 ish, width 20-21, I'm adding 2 to 3.5 inches to length and width. It should weigh in about 15-18 lbs, a hog I know.
I have a mmm 2200kv combo that I was thinking about using, I've read about it being used and seen videos but I just don't think it will be trouble free on the heat front.
I then turned to looking at the 1717 but worry about mounting that up.

The 1520 seems like it might work, I'm assuming I'd need to run 5 or 6s with it so again I'm assuming that something along the lines of a mamba xl2 would also be in order if I want to be worry free.

Current final drive ratio is 16, i have tires ranging from 6.4 to 7.5 inches tall to run. Pinion is a 9t Novak, spur/cd is a 50t hot bodies ve8.
I know my pinion is going to wear quickly being so small so I'd like to kv down and gear up from where I sit now with my calculations; 2200kv, 4s lipo, top speed around 45mph. I've never driven this vehicke, it's not finished so all my planning based in the 2200kv is just on the speed calculator using inputs from what I currently have.

So, would the 1520 excell here, what esc and voltage would you all suggest which leads into what esc I would need and lastly based on all that what pinion to accompany my 50t spur cd and 2.89 diffs.

Truck is a basher, desired top speed would be 40 to 60 with gobs of torque.
Thanks in advance fOr any help given.

The 1520 might work for you - but you'd be pushing it depending on your final weight and gearing. If the truck ends up being 18lbs and you try to gear for 60mph I would guess it wouldn't work too well. A 1717 would be better. But if that won't fit, your best motor would be a 1527:

If you have a 1520, you could try it and watch your temps. But if you need to buy one for $200 or more on eBay - I would probably pay a bit more and go with the 1527. My experience with the 1527 is in my 19lb truck geared for 50mph - it worked great, but on a hot day would go up to 160F or so (without a fan).

Put it this way, I run a 1520 in a truggy and it is perfect...like above stated, too small IMO for anything much larger, especially weighing 15+lbs.

1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S

Thank you both. Do either of you happen to know the mounting pattern/screw hole dimensions Of the 1717. I'm sure I can make it work if need be, I might have to get a new motor mount but that's about it.
The 1527 is a higher rpm motor though correct? That would be a plus I'm sure.

The 1717 has the same mounting screw spacing as the 15 series - it just has a larger diameter, if that is an issue. And yes, the 1527 is a 60k rpm motor compared to 45k for the 1717.

Go for the gusto man. Use the motor that will give you a little wiggle room regarding heat and power band like the Neu 1527, but consider that the can is a bit longer as well. Also use the CC-XL2 so you will have plenty of power control with the least amount of heat issues. I believe that setup will give you the best results, and the least amount of problematic issues. Good luck with your project and post up some pictures and specs as you go.

I have a heavy truck that I used 10S and also up to 60V on and it was a blast. I would suggest 10S or higher with a low Kv motor.

Good to know, so it's just 5mm or so larger. I really would like the extra rpm though of the 1527, It seems that the 1717 could almost hit max rpm's on 6s.
Ok, so who has a 1527 for sale???

I'd love to find one new/used for a discount. I appreciate the link though.

What esc did you use, ice160 or similar? Also, what mah were your batteries, 10s would most likely push my truck to over 20lbs with 5000mah batteries.
I think mechanical braking would be straight forward but I think I might miss reverse a little, I could live without it though I'm sure.

With 10S, you could use a pack(s) with less capacity. With 6S (22.2V) and 5000mAh would mean you have around 111w/h and you would only need 3000mAh with 10S to have the same energy.

I started with a little Jazz 10S, 40A Kontronik, but since it was a bit old, the capacitor blew. I later went with a Jazz 55A with 10S and it was a blast. Later runs was made with a Schulze 40.160 controller. Now I use my own controller and I mainly use my 10S ESC in my race truck with 8S 3300mAh-3700mAh and a Neu 1515/2Y. All my 8S and higher set ups stayed very cool. I now have a 1521/1Y that I run 5S (4500mAh) and 6S (5000mAh) lipos with, but that set up went on hold due to the higher voltage truck being so reliable.

I have a Neu 1527/1.5Y (825Kv) Smooth (New with connectors) that I was going to use when a new HV ESC I was planning on making, but ESC project got put on hold. If you're interested, send me an e-mail at brasuca2478@hotmail.com.

Go for a 1717. It seems to work great with the xbe.
