Thinking: Monster Buggy

Pictures likes these interest me. I would like to try to build one, but I don't know if the suspension really works with truggy tires. I need to know for instance if a mugen buggy will properly bottom out with truggy tires installed. The question that would arise is "why not buy a truggy?" Electric buggy is the most popular class at my track. And I can't race my truggified emaxx with the 30minute nitro amain. Same would go for a real truggy even with a battery swap, it would be hard. Besides I don't want to break any of those rare-ish parts on the maxx. I could dress the buggy up like a truggy for bashing then dress it down for racing.

I have also thought about making my Vorza Flux into more of a "Monster" buggy. I am not a big truggy guy and I love the suspension set up and the tight handling of a buggy and I think it would be great to throw some larger tires on it and raise it a bit.

A lot of times when I am bashing with it, I have problems on rougher terrain and I think this would help solve the problem.

Almost 'Monster' size without being too big, as to not bottom out the shocks first. Although I used the full offset rims I think 1/2 would do fine... maybe better. (will also help to clear a truck body as well if you decide to mount one)

I think you would like the results Providing you don't mind leaving the suspension set up for racing it's just a quick wheel change and your bashin' I don't race but I have done this to an RC8. Running gear was mmm 1520 6s A123's. I liked it quite a lot, it's was strong, it handled, it wasn't too big, it was versatile... but that's comparing to 1/8 truck and truggy. If I didn't have a custom build lst2 I would've kept the RC8.

It's left in the pic. It has wheel extensions and these wheels. The trick is to not get something too big otherwise it will look very MONSTER and handle like one too.


I didn't mind about the shocks fully compressing. It was extra pressure on the shock components and shock tower but it didn't give me much trouble.

WOW! Hey guys thanks for all the discussion! I walked in to SRIhobbies today. Its a nice shop with lots of 1/8th scale stuff. They have an xray x9e buggy for sale its used and belongs to a racer at the track. $225. Its real nice and has a lot of hop ups. The best thing is that I was able to open a pack of truggy tires and put them on the buggy. The suspension bottoms out successfully and has a mm or two to spare. I'm quite happy with this discovery! The other cool thing about this is that it has a Rc-Monster battery/ESC tray. It has metric screws. Which is a plus for me. most of which are 12.9. The only yet serious downfall is that the battery tray seems very small. like 140 by 50. I need 163 by 52. I don't know. I could put a bigger tray on it. I don't want to buy any more batteries right now. I just want to be able to use my big ones.

Anyway!! The Monster buggy may yet come to life! lol

Also I could mount the esc higher off the CD mount. I could custom make a center bulk top brace out of my CF stock. People say that some one could land a buggy on you in a race and mess you up! Is it true? Likely? It would allow me to run a larger battery.

Yes, you can damage the ESC. I had the ESC mounted on the rear of the center diff at the top plate height and there were several close calls.

i've since created a much LOWER mount. The ESC is now about .75" shorter than the front shock tower. So if I happen to land lid first the wing, body, and shock towers will take the abuse and not the ESC.

I don't think the buggies are wide enough to mount the ESC off the center diff though, I only got away with it because I'm using a dual battery tray setup.




I later changed the mounts and lowered the ESC even further.

And here's its current location. Notice how low it is between the two shock towers. Its going to take a direct hit to nail the ESC. And if the hit is like that, it probably wouldn't matter HOW I mounted it.

Hurray!! I've done it! Pretty easy stuff. Here is the recipe:
1. Add Losi 2.0E (do not substitute yucky nitro version)
2. Add 1/2 inch offsite hubs (any shorter and the chassis won't bottom out, nor will the tires clear the wing)
3. Add truggy tires










BTW I did not paint the body.

It still handles pretty awesome. Not quite as good as buggy tires would.

I have a similar setup, but use the Panther Komodo tires on 1/2" offset wheels(Maxx size, but with 17mm hex - basically 1st Gen truggy wheels). They are about 1/2" taller than a traditional buggy tire, and about 50% wider as well - basically makes a killer 1/10 truggy-ish buggy. I love the looks and the handling, and buggy arms hold up better than truggy arms in extreme bashing, too. :)

I've done that as well. Mostly did it for buzzin on the street, drifting and tearing up cheap buggy tires and saving the truggy wheels for when I got off road.
