new CC 2200 in older 4906 e-maxx, have setup questions please advise - 05.25.2014, 12:05 PM

Have an older e-maxx (3906 model) and just put a mamba monster 2200 in it. Love the power on my elite 5000 mah 7 cell packs. No need for more power this is enough for me.

1st problem: radio range sucks. Lucky to get around 75 feet of range, usually closer to 50 feet before it either stops if im lucky or glitches, lurches to a stop or slams from forward to reverse which im sure is killing the gears. I believe the issue to be 27 MHz TQ 3 radio system is no good with a brushless. Looking to upgrade to a 2.4 GHz system. Any guidance as to what I should get? I originally was thinking a spektrum system but after research I have seen a lot of stories of short range which scares me. Now im thinking the traxxas TQ-I system or a futuba 3pk system. Which would likely have better range with a brushless system? Range is most important dont really care much about extra features like multi model memory or adjustable end points. Planning to keep the 2 speed so I need the 3rd channel to operate the shifter. Any thoughts about the radios listed here? http://www.bigsquidrc.com/2-4-ghz-ra...itter-shootout
Seems traxxas had an older 2.4GHz system before the current TQ-I, how does the range compare on the new vs old? Any other radios I should look at with reasonable pricing?

Second issue: transmission idlers
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ore/13407.html Is this for the 3906 e-maxx or one of the new models?

third issue: differentials: my rear differential is upgraded slightly but not shimmed. Alluminum inner drive cup with 3 mm screws vs original 2 mm screws, and alluminum outer case. Looking to shim this differential completely, (outside and inside the cup as well as the outdrive from the differential to the center drive. What size shims do I need and maybe some links that would help me. Saw a couple posts elsewhere on using rubber O-rings as well when shimming, is that really needed? If yes, where and what size?

The front differential is bone stock for the 3906 model, nothing has been done to it. Was thinking just getting a differential from ebay from a stock e maxx brushless supplied by traxxas. Would that be sufficient or do I need to do additional work?

Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

note: asked this in a different part of the forum, deleted that and moved it here, Arct1k said TRX3996X idlers from the new e-maxx would work but require either grinding the idler or the inside of the case, just my luck I would mess something up so if those UE idlers are direct fit for an older e-maxx I would take them, just need confirmation they are the right part.

transmission idlers

Those idler gears are made for the 3906 transmission. You'll need 2 of them for your stock trans.

The Spektrum radios have 100 foot or less range when using the telemetry receivers. If you use one of the 'R' class (race spec) receivers you'll have more range then you'll be able to use. Even the 'S' class (sport spec) receivers haves a lot better range then the telemetry receivers.

You can put a brushless EMaxx diff in your older truck. I have a set of stock brushless EMaxx Diffs in a custom build with GA Bulkheads.

But I think you just need tra3996 which are dirt cheap... I never went through these.

My DX3R range is well beyond me be able to see my car.

These should do the trick... http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...nt+Hybrid+Bulk

PS go lipo

The unlimited engineering idlers are sold as a pair. Don't buy "2" quantities or you'll have 4 idlers.

I got the futaba 3pmx havent had a chance to run it yet because the truck is in pieces waiting for parts. I got the UE steel idlers (1 pack of 2) for $32. but they havent come yet. Anyone know how UE ships and how long it should take to get to the west coast?

UE ships ups and it'll probably take 4-5 business days to get to you.
I'm in California also, I've ordered from UE 1/2 dozen times.
Sometimes Robyn is out of the office and it takes a couple days for him to get back and mail of the gear you've ordered. Sometimes it goes out the next day. Its a 1 man operation over there at UE.

If it goes 2 days without your order being upgraded with a tracking# in UE then email Robyn with the order# and ask if it will ship soon.

Justin

If you're on a budget, I would like to suggest the following:

Radio: FlySky GT3B $40 + shipping
Great radio, excellent range, lots of adjustments and settings possible on it.
http://www.hobbypartz.com/79p-gt3b-carradio-lcd.html

Idlers: 2x Traxxas part 3996x $5 each + shipping
These are a little wider than the old E-Maxx idlers, but they work just fine in a 3906 transmission. I use them in my 3906 transmission in my converted Revo. I don't recall having to modify anything to make them work, but I could be wrong and might have had to lightly sand a ridge inside the case.

or free shipping here:

Buy a rear hybrid bulk and diff. It will take the most beating from acceleration, wheelies, etc. You will not regret getting the hybrid diff with its big, strong 1/8th scale gears. The peace of mind while driving to know that you can mash the throttle all you want without destroying a diff is wonderful. Put your upgraded diff in the front and shim it if it needs it. Or, if you want complete security, get the front and rear hybrid bulkheads and diffs.

(Arct1k is right; go lipo. Night and day difference. I would recommend Gens Ace 40c packs. Get a couple 2s packs. They aren't much more expensive than nice NiMH packs and will destroy any non-lithium pack in performance. They come with hard cases around them, so they are very durable. As long as you use them with a low voltage cutoff (built into MMM, just have to enable it) and charge them with a Lipo charger, they are very easy to maintain. Don't stab them, crush them, or short circuit them and they are perfectly safe.)
2s pack: http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-40c-50...-hardcase.html
3s pack (if you are crazy): http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-40c-50...se-direct.html
Decent charger: http://www.hobbypartz.com/thac6smbachw.html

Good luck!

Already got the UE gears and they dropped right in.
For the radio I got the Futaba 3pmx from my LHS.
Using a 1/8 scale differential on the rear and 1/10th scale differential on the front is not possible due to the different gear ratios so its upgrade both or none. I am not able to find anyone stocking the FLM hybrids with the 1/8th scale gears. Just the hybrids and I would need to get gears. What gears do I run in these and where can I get them?
Batteries: 7 cell elite 5000 batteries are plenty I have enough problems with the power I have.

If you get the hybrid bulkheads from FLM there's plenty of build thread explaining what Diffs you can use in the bulkheads on this forum.
Its a good option once you've shimmed the 1/8 Diffs to the bulkheads properly.
I personally prefer to go with the UE Diffs with GA 7075 or 6061 bulkheads. The UE Diffs pop up on eBay from time to time. Haven't checked the UE store to see if the UE ultralite Diffs are in stock or not. Definitely more expensive to go with the UE Diffs and GA bulks.

The cheapest diffs to go in the hybrids are ofna hyper 7 diffs. These are what UE sold as "super 6" diffs, just renamed ofna diffs.

The best way to get them is used in an entire old hyper 7 or often people sell the whole bulkhead and diff for around $30.
