Looking for some input for my Rustler - 04.07.2005, 09:09 AM

I'm looking to get a brushless system for my Rustler. I've got all metal gears in the tranny, except differential and spur gear. I run 6-cell GP's and 7-cell 3000mah beater packs on a regular basis, I race with the GP's. Between race days i do ALOT of bashing with it so i'm looking for something that can take a beating. I was thinking the 8s with a MGM Compro 80amp ESC should get the job done, but i'm open to recommendations. I would also get the motor clamp for added durability, but i'm not sure if it would fit in the Rustler tranny.

My main concern is the motor.....My current motor takes a pounding and i've pop'd the hood off a few times from bad landings, and i've had to re-shape the hood too so the brushes fit. If the motor clamp fits would it be able to protect the motor from bad landings?

I'd also like to not have to run a receiver pack, but would most likely add one later on once i build a mount for it, Can the MGM Compro 80amp ESC run without a receiver pack?

What about the 6s.....I was thinking that may be too powerfull for the rustler diff, and i dont feel like buying a new diff after every race. Bashing i run a locked diff, so i'm only concerned with an open diff lasting through atleast few race days.

With the MGM 80 you wont need a receiver pack. I am about to get the MGM80 and Lehner 4200 for my rusty.

I run a lehner 5300 and 9918 in my bandit. The 9918 is a little overkill but I may put it in other vehicles. It is a really nice setup.

The lehner 4200 or 5300 work work nice with a MGM 80 controller I am sure. The 4200 would run cooler in a rustler though. I own 2 of those motors also and it worked great in my stampede.

I am not sure about the 6s or 8s for a rusty because I don't own any of those motors yet. I would say you are right about the 8s being a better choice though.

The lehner 5300 or 4200 look pretty good. The added cost would benefit from the screw on endbell. I'll think about it. Since i'm running a low cell count(cant charge more than 7), the 5300 would be the better choice, no?

RCcarnut, How does the tranny hold up with a 5300 in it?

Tranny is fine with an aluminum idler. I still have not ever stripped a stock differential although the planet gears inside the differential I have stripped a couple times. You can get a steel differential but I never found the need. I have run lehner 4200,5300,Hv maxx and Novak SS all in these trannies all is I have to do is put an aluminum idler gear in.

I am sure I will strip a differential sooner or later or wear out an aluminum idler like some people have but I drive alot and it still hasn't happened.

The biggest problem I have with the drive train and my brushless setups is stub axles and half shafts. These break ALOT. I keep a whole bunch on hand and they are cheap but I usually breaK one or the other every few runs or so and I am really considering trying some type of dogbone or CVD setup soon. Good thing is stub axles and shafts are easy to fix but if I were racing it would be annoying.

Allright thanks, I think i'm gonna go with the MGM80 and a Lehner 5300 with next week's paycheck.

RCcarnut, As long as your running the stock control arms, you can take the rear out-drive cups, stub axle, and dogbones from a HPI RS4 MT, and with a little spacing with some fiber washers you can get it to work so the dogbones wont fall out. I know some guys on the traxxas forums made a nice diagram and everything for the conversion, do a search on there for it if your interested. I used to run that setup, but i used to break the stock control arms toooo much, so now i run RPM arms from an RC10T and the stock half shaft setup because the RPM arms are about 1cm shorter :(
