Mamba Max? - 12.07.2007, 09:06 AM

Why does the spec sheet for the Mamba say it's good for 2s-3s Li-Po's, but everyone seems to be running 4s?

Is it not made to handle 4s? And could that be why some of these users are having "thermaling" issues?

It is programmed to actually handle 4s and has a LVC for same... Main issue with 4s is that it uses a linear rather than switching bec - hence lots of heat and everyone on 4s has to use an UBEC.

I think we all except that we are running out of spec though on 4s... however it does manage it pretty well.

It runs very well on 4s, I have run all of mine on 4s without any issues. You do have to disable the internal bec and run either a ubec or receiver pack. With heaviery vehicles like the 8th cale monster trucks and truggies the weight does work the MM a bit. You can add a few caps to the input power leads to help it out. Otherwise it is a great esc for the money!

Thanks for the response.

I wonder why everyone doing these buggy conversions are staying away from the MGM controllers?

Is it just a cost thing or is it something else?

I think that cost has alot to do with it. Plus the MGMs seem to be largely untested. I know of a few on this forum that run them, aparently with success. So it is probably just the price!

I also think it's the price. Why pay 100+ more when you can have an esc that is easy to program, and can handle what you are doing? Plus, the Customer Service is impeccable.

I had tried several controllers before the MM came along, and none of them could do what a MM does.. and they were all rated for similar or higher amps and cost more. I never had a $400 esc though.

So I guess my best bet is to get a MM ESC and an external BEC right?

In theory yes. I happen to like my Quark too. But my MM is just as good.

This is the one I'm curious about.

It seems to have all the right specs. But I guess no one has any experience with these in the application that I am going for.

Which is 1/8th scale e-buggy btw.

I'm using the MM esc with a 4S Lipo. I just grabbed a 1600 Mah 2S Lipo and use it for my esc and servo. Cost me about $20 and sends just a little more V to the servo. Makes a crappy servo run great. Not the best for the long term though.

Just changed gearing to 24/36 for testing. Might be way too much. The 20/36 was hard to control.

Running cul-de-sac pavement suburb's.
