Cuts out at WOT? -
04.18.2005, 10:23 PM
This is weird. I have the 9918 + 9L + UBEC on my stock Emaxx. When i gun it WOT in 2nd gear, sometimes it will stop-go-stop-go thru the entire acceleration range, and a little bit at top speed. doesnt do it in 1st gear tho. This is with brand spankin new matched 1.18 GP3300's from maxamps. It does it half the time, which is really odd. It NEVER did this with my old, used 1.17 matched GP3300s (which are dead now). It started doing it when i started using my old 7-cell sanyo 2400's. I figured they being so crappy, that the intense amperage caused the volts to drop dramatically, cutting off power to the uBEC or something. So i get some new batteries, and the problem remains.
There is no drivetrain binding, gear mesh is set properly, and running on 14-cells with deans connecters (all solder joints are what i like to call "perfect" hehe)
Whats wrong with my baby??? :W:

I would look for a stripped gear. Possibly inside the tranny. I recently had this problem, and when the gear finally let go, I realized what it was.

My guess is you will need the 31 tooth 2nd speed output gear.

I was running my Stampede and it was doing the same thing. It ran very jerky, like the diff gear is stripped in one spot. Holding it at WOT it would act like you were revving it, pulling the front end up and dropping it, and doing that over and over. I just put a new one in it too, I hope it ain't stripped again or I'll just have to wait till I get that steel diff gear for it, one pack on a diff gear would be pointless to even bother plugging the battery into the charger for, and yes I got new plates for the slipper and it's about 1/4 turn from tight. I guess I'll take it apart again tonight and see, if it's not stripped then it's glitching. If it is glitching, how would I go about solving that problem?

@camra88;
Was it a gear, or have you still got a problem with it?

If it in fact is a glitch, we will have to chase it down., starting with the obvious things (like antenna placement, crystals, etc.).

OK, i just took the tranny apart. Besides from being worn down pretty good... (over 4 years old, never had to replace any parts in it hehe), it was in good shape. There is no way there is any skipping going on. All the teeth are there, and they mesh decently. Like i said, there is no way they are going to skipping between gears, there is still enough gear left to grab.
I was driving it again the other night -- worked perfectly.
When i had these problems, i had the antenna drapped under the body, where the middle of the antenna was hovering just an inch over the controller and motor. I have the FM JR XS3 synthesized radio FYI. Could this be causing interference with my FM radio? if so then wow... lol.

If the antenna was completely under the body, the end could have been near the diff (fast moving metal to metal contact = interference), it could have been picking up iinterference from the motor/controller as well. I am assuming you had some form of interference problem, as it works perfectly again. Glad you got it worked out!

i just came in from running my emaxx, and the cutting out at WOT is still there. The antenna is straight up out of the body. Could it be interference from the motor wires hovering just and inch or so from the reciever?

Here is another thing that has happened to me: If you look inside the tranny, it may first appear as if the gears are in good condition. What can happen, though, is the drive dog "nubs" will wear out, as well as the area on the gear that the drive dog "nubs" fit into. It will act exactly like you are describing. It would also make sense, because you had a perfect run somewhere in the middle. Perhaps if the tension is not quite right on the drive dog, it allows the nubs to slip inside the output gear. this recently happened to me happened to me, and I thought the gears were stripped until I looked a little closer at these items. I know you aren't thrilled about taking the tranny apart again, but you may want to check this out.

Hmm... I examined everything in the tranny, i noticed the idlers where really worn down, and that was about it. I looked at and hand-tested the peice that shifts gears (has those 2 nubs sticking out of each side), seemed function properly, in either gear. When i get home, I'm going to look and see how compressed the spring is on the shifting servo when in second gear, perhaps its not entirelly engaged... seems odd tho...
