The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

The maxx amount of cells i recommend on the 3100Xl and the 7018 (not 7718) are 12 cells.

It would be a bit risky. The xl3100 is a pretty powerful motor and can pull some amps. With conservative gearing and a fan, it would probably work, but I wouldn't do it myself. The xl2800 or below work well with the 7018 controller. If you just tool around and don't really race on a track, you could probably put 14 or 16 cells to the basic 3100 on short gearing and run the he** out of it for a while with little trouble. Put a heatsink on the motor (and a fan wouldn't hurt, either!), gear it with a 12-14 tooth pinion on the stock spur (more cells = lower gearing) and give it a rip. It will work for a while. I ran a 3100 motor for a full season on an e-maxx, but it eventually burned up. I only ran it on 12 cells, though. Higher cell counts with lower gearing probably would have prolonged its life. Of course, this is just advice for the budget oriented guys like yourself. I wouldn't recommend buying this setup new for the e-maxx at all.

I would gear it between 13 and 16 on the pinion with the stock spur. For 12 cells, you won't need a UBEC.

16 is too much for the 3100.

If you are running one servo(steering-no shift servo), you could get away without using a UBEC or receiver pack with 14 cells. I wouldn't run 16 cells on a basic xl3100 (the motor could take it, but it will draw some power/amps and will be pretty hard on parts). The xl3100 is a nice 10-14 cell motor.
