Project: TNX (that's Tamiya Nitro Xterminator!) - 06.20.2007, 05:32 PM

Hi guys,

I just thought I'd post about something a little different that I'm working on; a brushless TNX 5.2R.:018:
I wasn't even really planning to do this project until about 6 weeks ago, when I spotted a damaged 5.2R on eBay. It had a wrecked engine and a few minor parts were broken/missing (a bodymount was gone no shell, two bent hingepins and a few other minor bits) and it was filthy, but I managed to score it for little over £50 including shipping! And since I'm an electric guy...it made a great candidate for a conversion.:004:

This is how she came when she arrived:

...and here she is so far, after a complete rebuild, some upgrades and a few modifications:

For simplicity's sake, and my wallet's sake lol, I've opted to stick with the stock 2-speed transmission and manual brakes. The entire transmission is is great condition, so I thought I may as well stick with it! I've moved the brake servo to the front of the truck as you can see, to tidy the look up and make more space for electronics at the rear; I'm also using the stock steering servo for that instead of the stock throttle one. In addition, with a bit of cutting and drilling I've fitted some longer-than-stock UE SuperShocks. I gain a little travel with these, but the main reason was because I wanted to install better shocks anyway, and I had these lying around. They're much smoother than stock.:018: Incidentally, I am going to change the tyres for some Maxx Mashers...I just like those better, and these stockers are pretty worn out. This machine will be setup mainly as a basher...but don't worry, I won't thrash it to death with there being delicate solid fuel onboard, lol.:013:

The power system will be something along the lines of a Feigao 8XL with a Mamba Max ESC, and 4S 8000mah TrueRC LiPos...though I'm still working on how exactly to mount the LiPos (the chassis doesn't provide tons of room, and I don't want to have to make a completely new chassis!), lol. Though is any of you guys have any other ideas, then I'm open to options! I'm on a tight budegt, so this seems like a best setup right now.

Anyhoo, thanks for reading this! I just thought some of ya might be interested, and I'll keep this up-to-date.:027:

Wow, it looks like a different car from the first picture... Do you plan to have all the electronics on one side and the battery on the other? Because there may be room in the very back to fit the battery across the chassis, and the electronics up front. It should still be balanced, front-rear and left-right.

Thanks man. Battery fitment is a tricky one, though. I'm going to go with a single 4S pack, but the chassis is just the wrong shape lol! The motor can will extned to almost the end of the chassis, cutting off any room to mount the pack sideways. I might have to make up a plate of some sort to mount the battery off one side of the chassis.:032: Thanks for the suggestions though.:027:
