Limits of Compro controllers? -
09.30.2007, 05:36 AM
Hey guys,
I bought a couple of Compro controllers because I was using them for drag racing, due to the ability to program the "punch control." The drag racing thing is behind me. It got old quickly.
Anyway, I was getting ready to get another Quark, while I was waiting for mine to get back from S&T to run in my truggy. Although I've blown up quite a few Quarks, they are still the best in terms of smoothness and being able to get that instant burst of power for a standstill for some fun wheelie action.
My question is this. I have two 22418 controllers. Has anyone run these with the throttle delay set at the minimum? I'm just wondering how nuts you can get with the controller before the over current protection kicks in. I know that with my 16016, I could do much with it. If I set the delay to the minimum setting, it would just shut down immediately. Does the 22418 do any better with this?

Since I didn't get any replies, I did some experimenting.
For those that may be interested...
I was running a Losi 8ight T with the stock diff gears and 46/14 gearing. The controller was a Compro 22418 with a Neu 1515/2.5d (1700kv) motor. The battery pack was made up of 6S 4800mAh Kokam cells.
I programmed the controller for the second delay setting, which I think is around half a second. The battery setting was for 6S lipo and the cutoff warning was set to slow the motor.
I got on it pretty hard, although I didn't dog it. I quit dogging it because rebuilding diffs is getting expensive. At the end of clowning around for about 10 minutes, the motor temped at 115F and the esc was at 100F.
I guess the 22418 is going to do the trick on 6S with the relatively mild 1515/2.5d. This motor runs very nicely on 6S too.
I also found out that reverse doesn't engage when you double pump the brakes, although it still jumps into reverse, when you try to brake at slow speeds.

aangel, do you know how mgm is for repairs? The reason I ask is because my mgm 16018 let the smoke out today.

Good to hear something working out for ya.
I am thinking of getting that same motor to run on 6s as well. So no problems with controller cutting out on that motor/settings I take it?

bdebde, I've had no problems yet and the 2.5d seems to be liking the 6S. From what I understand, 6S is pretty much standard with the 1515/2.5d among the helicopter guys.
gixxer, from what I've seen, MGM has been good about warranty repairs and they really try to be helpful. It just takes a long time to get stuff back. The reports that I've heard say about a month. It took me three months to get my last controller back. By the time I got it back, I had almost forgotten that I owned it and had already bought a replacement, because I got tired of waiting.

Just got the return info from mike. Its good to hear that they are good with warranty repairs. Now hopefully I will be able to fight off the urge to buy somehting else while I wait.

gixxer, two is almost always better than one. Two is one and one is none, as you are now finding out. Go ahead and get another one. Just maybe try to change it up a bit. I think that the next one I get is going to be 8S or 10 S capable.

I know that is how I ended up with 3 mambas, a quark and an mgm. just got rid of 2 of the mm because I am running neu's now, might just have to put a fiegao/MM back in to hold me over. really dont want to be spending more $$$ if I dont have to.

gixxer, it must be a disease. Right now, I have about 6 MMs, 3 Compros and two Quarks. I'm thinking very seriously about getting a 16024 too.
I'm really liking the higher voltage setups. Everything runs so cool and smooth.

AAngel, as you know, I have a 1512/3D which is 1700kv. as well, it runs awesome on 7s2p A123, it has addictive power delivery, and smoothness with my Quark. You are probably getting amazing power from that motor with 37,000 rpm's at the finger!
I am glad the MGM is working for you.

Ok, I have 5 MM, 2 quark 125b, a quark 65r, an airplane quark 80, mgm 80 4s, a quark 33, 4 Mamba 25s, and a m.troniks truck. Not even sure if I have enough vehicles to use them all in. However I have used them all at one time or another! Always good to have a backup!

I guess as a backup I could always go back to my old schulze. wonder if that will even work with the neu?

Yeah, HV is definitely the way to go. What I did was this. I set everything up to go at a speed that I was happy with on 5S. I was getting around 52 mph, I think. Then I used Brian's calculator to figure out the gearing that I needed to go the same speed on 6S and voila. It's perfect.
My setup with the Compro is every bit as smooth as the Quark setup and the temps dropped. I don't think that I saw anything over 120 on the motor and 110 on the controller and that was after multiple full throttle runs down my street.
I think that I'm going to try a 16024 on a 1500kv (or less) motor. That way I can get a Maxamps 8S 4Ah pack, which will be the same physical size as a 4S2P 8Ah pack.

if you are going 8s you might also want to check out truerc's 5000mah packs. 8s would be
46mm x 50mm 155mm and sell for $175
