MGM 12032 Questions On Amperage

MGM 12032 Questions On Amperage - 12.13.2007, 09:50 AM

Two questions:

1. Can someone please explain why the MGM 12032 only has a continuous/max amperage of 120/150 amps? I would think that it would be rated higher since the esc can handle 32 cells/10S.

2. Since the 12032 is only rated at 120/150 amps will this result temperature/thermaling problems in heavier monster truck applications? How about other problems?

Potential application would be full aluminum E-Maxx with Neu 1515 2.5D at 6S or maybe 1521 at 8S.

Recommendations?

Actually, higher voltages allow you to use a lower kv motor for less current, so it makes sense. The only way to get high power at lower voltages is to use high currents.

32 cells is 38.4v (1.2v/cell). 120A at 38.4v is 4,608 watts, or over 6HP!!! What kind of MT are you thinking of that needs more than this amount of power?

As long as you select the appropriate motor kv for the voltage being used and gear within reason, there is no reason why 120A would not be enough IMO.

Brian is right. Higher voltage equals less current draw with a suitable motor. I used to run a 3000kv motor on 3s lipo in my LS10 and a 80amp continuous battery had trouble keeping up. Now I run 5s thru a quark 65 esc and am using a 5s lipo that can maybe hold up to 50amps continuous. The motor I run now has a kv of around 1800. So I have the smae overall motor rpm, but using more voltage and less amp draw. The battery and motor stay cool, and esc gets warm. Plus I have much more power! 120 amps at 8s would be killer powerful! You would be suprised at how much power high voltage systems can put out!

Let me ask you guys this...

Would I have any problems running the MGM 12032 with a Neu motor (in the 1300kv range-either 1515 or 1521 series) and 8S? It will be running in a full aluminum Fastlane Machine E-Maxx conversion. I am a basher...which means I do a fair amount of hard accelleration, braking, & reverse....

Well, I can see you having issues with the driveline and diffs holding up. Seriously, that setup will be wayyy powerful.

You might find Finnsters thread about his 11.5lbs (5.2kg) Revo with 10s1p A123 (equals 8s lipo), MGM 9032 and Neu 1515/2y (1100kv) interesting.

Depending on your final wheight you should even be good with an MGM 9032 which should be able to provide 2.5KW cont with 8s lipo (28Vx90A) and even more (didn't found it's burst capabilities). I run a 10.8lbs truggy with 10s1p A123 with a 65A rated ESC and my max power output is at 2.3KW. This car is overpowered and pulls wheellies with a center diff. All this combined tells me a MGM 12032 would be more than enough for your needs. A MGM 9032 should also be plenty.

Thanks...I understand how to deal with those driveline issues (more spare parts). The electronics part of the equation that you have coached me on helps a lot.
