well there are many different factors but i would say in general top speed would have to be nitro although the quick acceleration and torque of electric has a bit of a edge.
A nitro vehicle gains power as rpms increase. This creates a lag in power between the low and high rpm's. Because of this lag, electric vehicles will always have an advantage with thier "instant power".
Overall top speed can be acquired with appropriate power/gearing
Electric also holds the RC speed record, with Cliff Lett's vehicle going over 110mph. That was a while ago, and I'll bet people have surpassed that already (with electric).
SH Z-Car, Custom Crawler, 8s Savage, 12s XTM XLB 1/7 buggy, 4wd 4-link rear/IFS Pro4 truck, Custom Hyper 10 Short Course, Belt-Drive Mammoth ST 1/8 truggy, 4s 17.5 MM Pro HPI Blitz
In stock form, nitros will be quicker. A brushless motor versus a modified nitro engine would be a good fight. My money would be on the brushless motor though.
There are advantages to both. I like the power of the electric. I have to say though right out of the box the nitro has a higher top speed but I would guess the electric has the acceleration.
Peace!
