novak kit and single battery pack - 07.22.2009, 11:24 PM

I'm running the novak bl conversion on my kyosho inferno with a 4s 5k mah 25c, but i get tons of glitches, the only way to get rid of the glitches was by running a separate hump pack, is this normal? i would like to get rid of that hump pack, one more thing to charge and weight.

A couple things to try:

- Put a 1,000uF 10v capacitor on the power wires of an unused receiver port.

- Wrap the throttle cable a turn or two around a ferrite ring.

What radio are you using? Am, FM, 2.4Ghz?

I'm surprised it runs long enough for you to get glitches.

The BEC in the Novak HV ESC is not designed for 4s (or even 3S) operation. When you use two separate 2S packs on the two differenmt inputs the BEC runs of just one of the packs. If you are running a single 3S or 4S pack you need an external receiver battery (or an external BEC).

This has been known for a year or two by people who have been using the Novak system. It should be in the instructions. But that may not help if you got the system second hand without the instructions.

thanks for the answers,
i'm running 2.4 spektrum.
i got the system new from novak, but it is my first time trying electric stuff so a lot of that stuff is all greek to me.
the instruction don't mention anywhere that you need to run another battery for the receiver, so basically i do have to have the hump pack then?
thanks.

If you don't want to have another battery to charge you could user something like this (not trying to sell more Novak stuff, but it is convenient and reliable):

Castle makes one too, but it is sometimes prone to failure that lets full voltage through and fries your electronics:

All of them can theoretically fail in that mode, but I've not heard of it happening with the Novak but have with the castle. That could just be because more people use the castle because it is adjustable, but to adjust it, you also need to buy the Castle Link for another $22.

Or if you buy from Mike RCM or Holmes hobbies they will set the voltage on a BEC for you before shipping.

You also have to leave the ESC in the off position when using an external BEC to avoid dual powering the ESC.

AND one you turn on the pack switch, you need to turn the ESC switch on then back off (info that is NOT included in the instructions).

Ta Man: Have you ever used that Novak BEC before? In the link it says it allows up to 7S usage, but I'm fairly certain that does not mean that if you added this, you cant then run 5,6,7S on the HV system, correct?

Losi 8T 1.0, Savage Flux - XL style, LST XXL, Muggy, 3.3 E-Revo Conversion and sitting outside 425hp, 831 Tq Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel. It SMOKES

I have one of those BECs on my Havoc 3S (the internal BEC won't run a high torque servo on 3S).

Right: You can't run more than 4S on the HV system just by adding a BEC that can take more than 4S.

Well, you could try, but Novaks aren't like Castles (the MM for instance that lots of people use on 4S and some even on 5S).

Yep, that would be me. I dont get on there a whole lot anymore - got my 06 set up about where I want it now. Is yours an HO or an SO? If you've got the HO, and you dont have any of the electrical gremlins, keep that thing as long as you can.
