Which brushless motor fits an RC8? -
10.11.2009, 07:56 PM
I just converted my original RC8 RTR to electric. I used the AE kit since it required no modifications and did away with the mechanical brakes. Anyway, the Tekin 1350kv and 2250kv do not fit the motor mount, the can touches the chassis and the screws do not line-up. These are considered "truggy" motors, but it looks as if the "buggy" motors are just shorter, but the same diameter. My old Novak HV will fit, but that has a new home and I plan to run lipo.
So, my options are:
Castle MM, but which one? I heard the 2250 and 2650 are different sizes.
or
Tekin "buggy" motors, but again, is the diameter smaller?
On a side note, I did use the proper spacers or the new spur gear wouldn't be spinning. Thanks.

The Tekin motors are the same diameter, just different can lengths. The Castle/Neu motors are also same diameter with different can lengths.

Looks like I might be stuck with Novak:
MM = 39.98mm; 41.78mm with fins
Tekin = 40mm; 42mm including fin
Not that I have a problem with them, all of my Novak stuff still works and gives me very little issues.
What the hell was AE thinking, they made no mention of this on their site or in the manual. I would have gone Tekno, but the reviews didn't look so hot.

just twist the motor so the screws line up.
and if your stuck with novak- you stuck with the improper setup.

I found a review in the UK and it said that the conversion is limited to 39mm. So, I looked at the Losi Xceliron and Speed Passion combo's. Both seem to still be in the development phase, kinda like MM v1 and v2. I don't have time for that.
I couldn't find a Neu 1415 at my normal online hobby shops and twisting the motor would line up the top screw, but made the bottom screw even more off.
So, without turning to Novak, I found that I could install a second spacer:

I am just not sure that it will leave enough screw in the diff braces.

What kind of screws are used in the diff braces? Couldn't you get longer ones?
I have heard the Speed Passion gear is to be avoided. Apparently their v1 stuff crashes and burns right out of the box. They are supposedly working on updated stuff, but if you order online you'll probably be buying v1 that sellers are trying to move out of stock. Search for Speed Passion, I posted a thread asking about them awhile back and no one had much good to say.
You could always go with a Feigao or other 36mm Feigao clone (Hobbycity XL motors with RCM clamp), or Medusa if you can find a used one for cheap (no service/support though).

Yeah, I know longer screws are an option, just wondering what an extra 2mm or so will do to everything else. I will check when I get home.
I may just grab one of those Speed Passion motors since they are made by Feigao. I wanted a new as well, but I guess that can wait. I am trying to do too many things at once here.

If 39mm fits, a smooth can 15 series neu will work.

Any idea if the same applies to an RC8TE. I just picked one of those up, and was planning on using one of my Castle 2650 motors. Thanks.

Center diff shim is the easiest route to take to get what motor you want. I did my RC8 with the RCM kit. Tekin motor fits no prob.

Just shim the diff mounts and install longer screws respectively. That's what all the cool kids are doing.

I ordered these two items yesterday:
Associated FHCS 4x14mm
Associated E-Conversion Center Diff Riser (RC8 Only)
4x14mm screws are 2mm longer than the screws in the kit and this will be the second riser installed which is 2mm. So, in theory, this should work out perfectly and provide more support than just simple shims.
I will have the parts tomorrow.

I have the RC8Te kit, and my Tekin T8 2000 kv. fits perfect. I know another guy, who have the MMM combo with the 2200 kv. motor in it, and it was tight but fit ok.

I believe the chassis's on the RC8 and RC8T are different. The single diff riser that comes with the RC8e kit is for the RC8 only, even though the kit works on the Truggy and SC. I would suspect that the diff sits higher already on those two models, most likely 3-4mm higher.
