MGM Compro Worth it or not? - 01.22.2008, 06:07 PM

I am in situation when i want new ESC, but nothing reliable on market.

I am working on my LSP shaving weight off right now redesighn battery box new plastic arms some carbons and etc and plan to race with it only. In my opinion 5S is more than enough with 9XL 14/44 gearing and for Race i plan go to 4S on 9XL and gear up a little bit to ~35mph

Basicaly i want descent ESC at least 4S with good responsibility and brakes that not overheat and dont work on limit.

Before good candidate was MM but with their stupid over voltage protection and not designet to work on 4S, now its not counted anymore

Quark is expensive and with heat issues

BK 9920/12020 dont trust them anymore one burned with red fire second one left fith blue smoke

And now think about MGM Compro 16018-3 its modern possible to set up with PC and etc two things that hold me is Quality and Price. Ok if it so advance maybe i will pay for that but what about quality?

I saw lots of threads there somone tells about how ESC burned or not working, some smoke left out or warranty issues. Is it worth to buy or wait a little bit and see what market brings?

The MM doesn't work with 4s? AFAIK, it doesn't like 14 NiMH cells, but thought 4s lipo was ok.

What about an aircraft ESC? Yeah, you'll probably need mech brakes and the pistix adaptor, but they seem to be more reasonable in price and even have higher voltage models...

My friend bought MambaMax and with half charge of 4S its arms and fully charged 4S LiPo its not arms
Yeah I tried to use Plane ESC and with mech brake. It worked but response on trigger realy bad. No chance to correct trajectory on jumps then car nose diving. Realy uncomfortable to race even nitro truggy feels much better.
Second i want shave weight off so much as i can. We have 3*15min mains so I can save some weight on batteries.
Now i have mixed feelings do I invest money to ESC and save on batteries or vice versa.
In my opinion $150 for car ESC its OK, if pay more only if it worth it so why i am askind about MGM's

I have brand new MM's direct from Castle and they appear to arm and be fine with 4S. I've been waiting for my charger to come back from being flashed but seems fine.
Is it with fully charged LiPo? Or its arms with full lipo with new firmware?

Long story short, I am glad I bought one and cant fault it yet. I run an 8xl with it on my savage and unless it is running in really long grass, it doesn't even get that warm. Hope that helps.
Thank for you input, some satisfied MGM owner ;)

gday Tom255,

this is my first post but after reading yours I thought now is the time. I have a mgm 16018 in my savage and was unsure as to wether or not to get one also after reading all the posts. In the end I think it is like all things and human nature, we are the first to complain but last to give any praise. Anyway enough of that, mine has been fantastic. I have only run it a handful of times on 4s but it has been flawless. I had some issues programming with the pc, (maybe a vista issue not sure) so I did it via the transmitter which worked out no problem at all. I personally thought this may be better due to the fact you may wish to change a setting when your out and dont have your computer with you anyway. In saying that I can see the merit it using a pc as it is easy to program in that all your info is there in front of you.

Long story short, I am glad I bought one and cant fault it yet. I run an 8xl with it on my savage and unless it is running in really long grass, it doesn't even get that warm. Hope that helps.

Looking even better now startup is supposed to be cleaner...

For warrantee there is NO better than the MM - It is a wait and see for MMM - But by the sound of it we will all be off of CC's back for a bit with this new firmware :)

I have the MGM 160/18 and have had no problems so far...you usually hear complaints and people tend to voice the problems more than they do praise so I think most work fine ,,,just my 2cents...
