friend wants to start RC what to buy?

hey guys a freind of mine might get into RC cars. i was telling him about mine and he seems very interested. he rides quads so he will probably want a gas truck (due to the sound)

what do you think would be a good truck?


the new savages look pretty mean
maybe a 3.3 revo for simplicity of the motor?
new MGT?

i really dont think he will want to spend more than 500. hell he might not want to even spend more than 300 idk.

ima talk to him tonight and see what he wants to do

my first thought was the new emaxx... problem is he would need a charger.... batteries... and all that good stuff.

which will probably get him well over 500.

if he wants nitro - cant go wrong with the 3.3 revo - i have one - and its way fun - jmho... Whatever he gets - im sure he will be hooked..... Enjoy

MGT

By far the easiest to tune. Traxxas engines are finicky. I've had 4 of them so far and hated each one. Savage is decent, but hasn't been updated and the new MGT is beastly. Seen the vids of it yet? Spins the tires into 2nd with that .50 engine. And it's drill start, which he's bound to have.

I've had two MGTs and another is sitting at my home, waiting to be fired up. Go for the MGT man!

i showed the guy the revo 3.3 mgt 8.0 and the savage he said the revo looked the coolest.

Revo is good with a brushless setup or a 18 TM. The 3.3 isn't bad, just lacks some torque unless tuned perfectly.

The last two MGTs I had were the original AE .21. Both of them were broken in by me, both of them ran like they were meant to be started once, tuned once, and then refueled again and again - because that's what I did with mine. The one I have waiting for me is a 4.6 and should be plenty of power. I'm looking to get a 2nd one for the girlfriend instead of PinkVo since it's just easier to fuel up and go. These trucks are pretty stout too, not to mention easy to work on. Oh, and these trucks can handle any engine. They're throwing in .50s from the factory with the MGT 8.0. He won't be dissappointed with it!

All the electronics come out with a few screws, then you can just blast it with some cleaner. I'm gonna keep mine fairly stock, only upgrades will be for strenghts or cool factor.

I'd go with a Savage before a MGT. I just never liked em, mostly because there a ripoff of the Maxx trucks. Granted, they have improvements, but either way, there a ripoff of the design.

MGT improved the weak bulkhead design of maxx and they are great bashers.
I would go for muggy as they have simple drive train, great suspension. just add vantage carbon low torque pipe and they are beasts (well baby beasts compared to brushless trucks :) )

Savage is a very limited design. They didn't design enough suspension points and I've seen too many TVPs, shocks, and arms bend and break. Not to mention I've had many of my buddies replace their Savage engines within 2 gallons of running them. They like to run hot too, like Traxxas engines.

And yes, the MGT is a big block Maxx, which is what the 3.3 Maxx should have been. Yet, it's stronger and has a better chassis design and layout.

Remember, this isn't going to be his first and last R/C - if he likes the hobby. If he gets something finicky and action packed with problems, he's not going to stay interested. Sorry to say, but the Savage isn't very first time user friendly. I think HPI did do a good job of making their first MT, but it did have a few flaws.

Losi, however, has been making the move into user friendly R/Cs for a few years now. A lot of their kits have higher end electronics and engines. I agree, if he makes a decision, it should be a Losi or an AE.

Watch out for the muggy, clutch shoes do not last, too high gearing in the diffs, and the center spur is not big enough. You either need to figure out how to lower the diff ratio or add a tranny insted of the center spur. That is why the lst works ok and the muggy melts clutch shoes. I have fixed about a dozen so far.

i would not get a muggy. i had one and it was a PEICE. not my kind of truck. always had problems with it.

you know instead of spending 500 bucks on a new truck what i could do is take my crt BL roller and convert it back to nitro. all i would need is the engine mounts right? i could get a nice BRAND new motor and a nice pipe and it would be a sweet truck right?

or are the CRT not bash worthy?

Putting in another vote for the MGT here. I've got one I'm selling to a friend cheap so he can get involved with the RC fun.

I'm getting rid of all my nitro headache, the MGT was by far the easiest to stay tuned and start without shoulder pain, which is why I feel OK about selling it to a friend. Bullet proof truck, I've rebuilt the shocks and put a few sper gears in it, that's all.

Second to the MGT I would say a Losi XXXT would be my next suggestion (stay away from nitro all togeather, less mess, no pissed neighbors, more driving fun). Every LHS I've been in that serviced surface RC's had every part for the XXXT in stock, huge bonus.
