Hr quick change bulk head review - 02.22.2009, 08:11 PM

here is a small write up about the new quick change bulk heads from hot racing. iam installing them on my 3905 emaxx.

1st impressions. the look to be made nicely.im not sure of the grade of aluminum but the fit and finish are well done. the QC portion of the bulk slides in and out and fits snug.you get the bulkhead and all hardware, hinge pins along with extra bushings.

the quick change is held in by two screws from the top, remove these screws and the QC slides forward...

also the hinge pins are supported by Teflon bushings. the bulks come with them pre installed and also an extra bag.

installation....

they mounted up to the chassis with no problem.screw holes lined up perfectly.now the back of the shock tower portion did not meet up with the chassis like the stock did. i do not know if this will cause a problem or not.

now on my emaxx iam running rpm arms. with these arms i had to do some trimming. they did not fit freely within the bulks.when installed the arms would stay in the position you put them in.they should move freely and fall from their own weight.i had to trim some of the arm material off to achieve this.mostly on the bottom arm.

also on the bottom the hinge pins were almost to short.the eclips were a pain to get on.not alot of room here. as you can see in this pic below the hinge pin also rubbed the steering bellcrank on both sides. a little sanding of the bellcrank and all is good.

once i got the bottom arms on and moving free i moved onto the top.rite off the bat i noticed that the top hinge pin was to short to use with the rpm arms(stock may be different). there was no way i could get the e clips on. luckily enough i used the stock screw in type hinge pin. they fit the bulks perfect with no slop.

this is as far as i got for now.keep checking back for further updates.

more updates.....

ok, so i go to put on the rpm shock tower and the holes don't line up very well. the bottom of the shock tower hangs down to far. so i had to shave a small amount off to get the holes to line up.

notice the shaved right side compared to the unshaved left. thats how much had to be removed.

here you can see the bulkhead and arms attached. i didnt put the diff in yet as i wanted to do that the way the QC bulk was intended to be used.

next removed the QC portion of the bulkheads to get ready to instsall the dif. these parts are machined well.the fit is good and they slide in and out hassle free.

in this pic you can see the grooves the QC fits into.

next was time to slide in the front diff.it took a little push to get the diff in but nothing to hard.theres grooves that the pinion collar fit into to keep the diff aligned.you can see them in the pic above.

now it was time to slide the QC back in.went in pretty easy.

so thats as far as i got. just a little more to go and it will be on.

its a nice design BUT you still have to remove alot to get to the diffs. all the screws for the skid plate, lower bumper.bulk head brace screws and the drive shafts pins.

still a tad easier then taking all that stuff off.

well i just took out the diff to change the fliud with the new hr qc bulkheads. it did make it easier. with just taking the skid plate off and undoing the drive line the diff slid out after taking out the blue portion of the bulkhead..

so these bulks do make taking the diff out a bit easier. how durable....dont know yet.

quick update with some pics !

DONT BUY THESE BULKHEADS !

after a run and a not so hard hit i bent the bulkhead pretty bad.bad enough where the quick change portion will not come out due to the bent screw.

and the lower hing pin....

Nice review. Time to upgrade to FLM combos with ofna buggy gears. No need to ever take them apart again.

ahh! that sucks! how much are you out?

They should of channeled the removable part once more so it becomes a structural part.

What you need to run with these are the solid al bumper mount spacers. You all know the littlew blace x shaped plastic thing that goes between the bulks, and the bumper mount screwws thread into is very weak. I have an emaxx that has these bulks that I got in trade. I also have some of the al spacers that I plan to run. HR should include these parts with the bulks, just makes sense.

if you want to run these bulkheads you need a shelf queen

A pair of SweetStrobe Braces would be the ticket for this design. There's no hole for the bottom part of the brace on the HR bulks but the top alone would give a huge amount of extra protection, plus make them out of 7075 alloy

I like it.......I LIKE IT ALOT!!!!!!

Only problem with the strobe braces is that there is not enough material on the hr qc bulks to get the lower screw in, so the opening can still spread out. It would be better to have the 2 screws pass thru the blue spacer and thread into the bottom of the opening. That would effectively tie it all together. Not sure if there is enough "meat" to get a decent length thread though, as the lower hingepin is close...
