Q for Novak Rep, Motor problems ? -
11.22.2009, 05:23 PM
I have a New HV 6.5/Pro that I've rewired per Novaks instructions to run a single 4s pack with Red wire pulled and a Castle BEC and have installed in a Traxxas Slayer. I have it set up with servo brakes,ESC set for zero brakes.
The problem is under half or more throttle especially WOT, it seems to loose power or stutters for a milli-second sometimes 5-6 time in a row very quickly. Under low throttle inputs it operates normally ?
When I drove it at the track Friday after running 10minutes or so the truck would surge slightly and shut off (like a thermal but it's not,it runs very cool). Let it stand and it would resume working but still stutter badly.(not cogging)
I'm using 30C 4s lipos and have tried different packs,Spektrum(antenna wire is fine),geared for 41mph and have tried pretty much everything to trouble shoot this but keep coming back to the motor and or ESC ? Shortly after purchasing this HV new the motor had a magnet let loose, I returned it and Novak replaced the motor(supposedly) with a reman but I haven't ran it since I received it back 8-9months ago till this install.
Any help would be appreciated because I know I'm SOL for warrentee work.
I even disabled the LVC and problem persists.
Any ideas ??

I advise you to C&P into an email for lack of confusion. This is what I generally advise:
You can always email tech@teamnovak.com with your question, during regular CS hours. Before emailing, take a moment to review the instructions (trouble-shooting guide) originally included with your Novak Item:
Novak Instruction Downloads
Quote:
Please make your initial email as detailed as possible. Include:
~ warranty claim?
~ speed control (brand/model)
~ motor (brand/wind)
~ rotor (old/new)
~ connectors used
~ servo (brand/model)
~ radio system (receiver/transmitter)
~ vehicle & gearing
~ battery, brand (c rating/capacity)
~ any external modules (BEC/brand, Glitch Buster)
~ other important info: water damage, corrosive chemical sprays, excess heat, etc

The more information you provide in your first email, the more quickly tech support can offer you assistance.

Random thought: Have you checked for a loose sensor wire in the plug?

Chances are, we did not get your email. Make sure the subject line on your email includes either "Novak" or the product name, eg: "HV Pro Motor" Please resend it to tech@teamnovak.com and PM a copy to me, which I will forward to tech.
We have had a number of employees out sick, but that should not have slowed down a response.

Neil,
Yeah, I hawked everything. Nothing out of place, it should be working ?
I had to send it in immediately after purchasing last year for a motor issue, I wrote them a note explaining how it was acting and to please check the ESC also. I had another older 6.5 motor I swapped out the new with to test and try to figure the problem out myself(then) and once I found it was definitely the motor I soldered the broken one back on.(It worked but acted strangely) When they returned it it was the same motor but, I guess the just replaced the inards ? I'll bet they never checked the ESC, so the whole time it sat in my tool box after it returned I guess it was never fixed properly ? I' never new till I installed it in a 3.3 convert I built just a short while ago. It acted up in the revo but only a couple times during several packs, after I installed into the Slayer all hell broke loose ?
Guess I'm screwed ?

I'm guessing your email may have been tagged as spam. NovakTwo suggested using the words "Novak" or the product name in the subject. I assume the spam filter is set to allow emails with those words, but discards the rest.

In second email I included ("HV6.5Pro"-Tech Problem) in subject line so we'll see what happens this time. Never thought about a spam filter, your probably right as always MrB.
Sorry if my posts sounded shitty asking for help Novak2

Thank You
Heres a recap of our emails;
John,
I'm using Zippy H packs rated at 30-40C burst
These packs are BETTER than my MAXAMP packs I had.
I use the same packs in a 14lb LST2 with ZERO PROBLEMS
My Lipos are NON ISSUE in this.
If I can't use mechanical brakes why is there a option to delete brake function ???
It defeats the purpose going back to ESC brakes because thats NOT what I want.
Once I received it back from you guys after repairing the motor I let it sit in my tool box for a while because I was so disgusted with what happended and so happy with my Castle Monster combo. When I installed it in a 3.3 revo convert it acted weird and would stumble now and again. After I installed it in my Slayer the problem got progressively worse faster to the point it was undriveable.

Jeff,
Thank you for the information you have provided. I would like to know what brand batteries you are using. Lower quality batteries can cause problems sometimes because the C rating really isn’t what is advertised.
I might also add that it would be wise to try this system without the mechanical brakes and try using the brake function in the ESC.
Did this system always have this problem or was it after you received the replacement motor?
Respectfully,
John Hallman

Understandable,
How about this, I already pulled it from the truck due to disgust. I have no problem sending it in for your expert opinion, would this help ?

Jeff
I was only making recommendations of things to try. It’s called TROUBLESHOOTING. If I could have you simply try these things, it would help me determine the next step to take with this.
