Weird question - 04.18.2010, 02:16 PM

Hey guys,

I noticed something weird today. I'd finished running my brushless Hyper 8 for the day and took it home, unplugged the lipos etc and prepared to inspect it before put it away. I noticed as i turned the front wheels by hand from side to side, the red light on my DX3R receiver flashed, and the red light on my MMM flashed. They flashed every time I turned the wheels, which in turn was turning the servo. Does the servo somehow send a small current to the receiver and ESC?

As I said, weird question

I have the same thing.
When I turn my servo by hand, the light on my SR3100 receiver flashes.
This is because every e-motor works as a generator as well...

If I had to guess I'd say by turning the wheels by hand you are inducing a voltage via the servo motor, and that voltage is then applied to the RX and ESC.

P.S. On one of the servos I bought recently it said turning them by hand can be damaging, I had never heard of that before. Does this have any merit?

If you wrench it side to side quickly you could in theory strip the gears; this is easy to do on small, plastic geared servos, but on metal geared ones = not so much. I'd just be gentle when handling electronics, avoid fondling things more than neccessery.
