in my opinion - i would have to say that given the right circumstance any speed controller will get hot ( overgearing etc. ) however if your speed controller and motor are paired for the given type of driving you will be doing ( racing, bashing, high speed runs etc )then i would say that no it is not necessary. I have always run a fan and probably always will run a fan - i would rather have my speed controller run cooler than hotter. Even if not necessary - its a small investment (fan) so i would rather be safe than thermal... Just my .02:D
The need for a fan, like HotnCold says, could be based on the sytem, truck, tires, gearing, running conditions, etc. Also, as stated, if the combo is selected properly, it is more of a luxury than a necessity. I run a fan on all my controllers, even though it isn't necessary. The $10 is cheap insurance in my book, and cooler is always better, but it certainly isn't absolutely necessary.
Can I get a pic and or diagram on how to have a fan for the speed controler or motor for the g-max. My controlor dosnt seem to get hot but my motor gets prety hot.
Ryan, what radio do you run? Do you still use a shift servo? I remove the shift servo and plug a 5 volt fan into the 3rd channel on my receiver. Another way is to wire a 12 volt fan directly to the battery leads on the controller. Either way works very well. The fans get beat after a while and need to be replaced, depending on the abuse you dish out to the truck.
Org. radio. I like having the option of 1st or 2nd gear thats asuming thats what it does. Dont really feal like resoldering and shrink tubeing deans conector. Can I run a fan with a 9 volt batt. or something like that?
i dont think they carry a fan that is small enough to use on your controller ( based on the radioshack web site ) - they only sell larger fans - also - if you use an external 9V battery - you will have to find a way to secure that as well. With all that mounting you probably would save a bunch of time by just connecting to the deans connectors ( I hate soldering as well )- but you will always have the fan battery charged - and you wont have to replace and secure 9V batteries. Just my .02:)
Thanks for posting that link. I also can get (have) 12 volt fans that work great on the speed controller. They are about $6. They are a little beefier than the Radio Shack fans (last longer). That link looks like it has a few options that would work well.
