It might be a little difficult for the MGM 60amp to handle the motor, but on higher voltage and lower gearing it should be fine.

With adequate airflow and proper gearing, the 60 amp controller will work fine with the 5300 basic motor. Ideally, the 80 amp controller should be used with the 5300. The 60 amp will work great with the 4200 or below motors, but it will be challenged with the 60 amp controller, depending on several factors. I actually tested the 60 amp controller with a 5300 in my t3 and it worked fine, but if it was overgeared (by gearing selection or large tires, for example), it could get into thermal territory.

what is thermal territory (new to brushless). is that just overheating = causing problems?

i think i will most likely go with the 4200/60 then

Thermal territory means the controller may thermal (overheat and shut down).

Exactly. It shuts down to prevent damage to the motor/controller.
