If any of the motor phases are constantly "on" because of a damaged ESC, it could certainly burn the motor.
Even if the questionable ESC works on a new motor, the remaining FETs could eventually go as well and could burn the motor later on.
I really would not run on a damaged ESC. Replacing just the ESC now will be cheaper than replacing it AND a motor later on. If you are running an XL motor, I'd just get a Mamba Max ESC since they are relatively cheap. Plus, the MM has a $50 "fix it no matter what" warranty. Can't beat that!
