New Slayer wannabe project... - 07.19.2008, 02:59 PM

Now that I've had time to play with the Slash a bit, I find I really like the way it looks. I toyed with the idea of converting it to 4WD but will be more trouble that it's worth. The Slayer is just a version of a Revo, and I've been there, done that.

So, I am going to pick up a buggy and do the necessary modifications to use a Slash body since it fits very nicely on a buggy platform.

My plans:
  • ESC: Gonna use my modded MMM (no fan and disabled BEC).

  • Lipos: 6s @ 4-5Ah.

  • Radio: Spektrum of course!

  • Motor: Neu 1512 2.5d, 1.5y, or 3d for a suitable rpm at 6s voltage. Looking for something around 1800kv. I think the 1512 will be plenty of motor for this application.

  • Buggy: Gonna start looking for a roller. I'm leaning to Ofna simply because my LHS has parts, and even if they don't have what I need, pretty much anyplace has them.

  • Speed/Gearing: Shooting for 35-40mph max. So, at 6s on a 1800kv motor, I'll be using 46/12 to 46/14. I want to keep it driveable. I want to get rid of the center diff and use a spool or one of those single speed spurs from an Ultra GTP or something like that. Another reason to go with an Ofna buggy I guess...

  • Tires: Dunno about this. I really like the narrow scale look. Buggy tires are narrow, but not exactly scale looking. Since pretty much all buggies use 17mm hubs, I can't use Traxxas Slayer wheels. Any ideas on this one?

  • Suspension: First thing I wanna do is set the arms/suspension for max travel, which means putting the shocks on the outermost mount holes on the shocktower, and innermost mount holes on the arms. Then, get stiffer springs to compensate for the different suspension travel geometry.

  • Body: Like I said, I'm planning to use the Slash body. Being a Traxxas product, replacements will be available everywhere when it gets wrecked (notice I didn't say "if"). Of course, this will require fabbed mounts, but that's no biggie.

  • Bumpers: I'll probably figure out a way to fit the Slash or Slayer bumpers on it. Gotta complete the look after all!

The first thing I need is a buggy. Like I said, I'm leaning towards an Ofna platform. Any current Hyper will do, or anything that is solid and dependable. Anyone have a roller in good condition they are willing to part with for a good price? If not, I'll hit up eBay.
