UPDATE - The Novak 4.5 HV Test

I finally got my butt in gear and started some testing. The results quite frankly pissed me off in more ways than one. I tracked Motor and ESC Temps, Motor RPM, Throttle Level, Voltage, and AMP draw using my with my Oracle Data Recorder.

My thought was that since the Novak HV 4.5R ripped it up pretty well on my E-Revo it should be able to handle a freaking buggy - that would be a big NO and a disappointment in so many ways. First the massive Novak motor heatsink had to be ground down on the mill to allow for driveshaft clearance and my rear support had to be moved to the other side of the driveshaft (that part was easy and required just a countersunk hole.) I fabricated a ESC mount to bolt up to the diff tower and mounted the GINORMOUS fan cooled Novak HV ESC. and spent the better part of an hour getting everything hooked up to the Oracle data recorder.

Basically I beat the hell out of the system until it thermaled and boy did it thermal a lot. Turns out that temp seems to be around 155 degrees however I would imagine if I could have mounted the temp probe inside the ESC instead of stuck in the heat sink that temp would have around 200 degrees (a typical termaling temp). RPM topped out at just over 10,000 RPM with the 3S 5000MH MaxAmps Lipo pack with current maxing at around 100 AMPs, and a 12.2V peak. The motor really wasn't the issue, it was that freaking decade old ESC. Come on, let's at least move into year 2000+ technology. It's fan cooled for God's sake, it can't even keep cool with a 1.5" fan blowing on it. The kicker was it was also pretty damn slow, not like I can gear the thing down a ton from the 16T pinion. I didn't have a GPS strapped on however, eyeballing it I would say in the high 30's.
I am going to gear down a bit if I have the clearance, otherwise I may give the 4.5R motor a spin with a Mamba Max or Tekin R1Pro and see what happens.

I would say 3s isnt enough for a 1/8 buggy at any speed, especially not for the high 30mph range. I gear my buggy on 4s for low to mid 30s. The overgearing combined with the tiny novak rotors would definitely cause your heat problems.

This is exactly correct. I run a 6.5 hv motor in a crt.5 on 3s, and it seems like it gould do with 4s. Those novak hv motors really need rpm to produce any power. Go up to 4s and drop to a smaller pinion.

I will 4S a shot and drop a couple teeth on the pinion. Never had these issues on the e-Revo even on 2S - damn thing would run all day. Just remembered, I was running a BEC on the Revo. Might try that and see if that helps also.

Novak finally started giving gearing recommendations for their motors. The do not recommend using the 4.5 for anything but a speed run, but they suggest using a 10-11t pinion for the new 5.5 (depending on model). Also, assuming you are still using the 1/8 in shaft, the old 4.5 is equivalent to the new 5.5, so a 10t or 11t should work. If you have a plastic spur, century and thunder tiger make mod1 pinions for their helis (go down to 9t) but they are not hardened. I think Novak has "hardened" pinions now in 11t, maybe even 10t.

Wow an 11T Mod1, now that is a freaking tiny Mod 1 pinion - that might work. Just guessing here but I would say that since I am only seeing 10K RPM, I need to go way down on the gearing and since the motor didn't seem to even break a sweat, I might be able to ditch the heat sink.

Yusa Buggy Setup Sheet

Some chassis tuning on all three Yusa rigs. I copied all the settings off my Losi 8 Race Roller onto the Yusa's and that netted a HUGE performance improvement - go figure. Below are the suspension setups I used with about a 3-4 toe out on the front wheels and zero degree camber on all wheels. I clipped in 1/4 shock pre-loads on all shocks.

it's cottonwood season!
ok, well that was off topic... I would feel sorry for anyone who had an open motor and drove through a small pile of cottonwood seed things... (if nothing else it would be tiresome to clean off, but it could cause a short in the motor...)
Ok, so I am just ranting about cottonwoods... (either that or you destroyed a cotton field with your buggy, but I will assume that it is cottonwood tree seeds...)

Out where I live it looks like it's snowing with freaking cottonwood fluff.

Yep giant PITA.

Yeah, I was listening to the radio yesterday and someone called in claiming it was snowing... After about a 5 minute rant by the talk show host about global cooling someone else called up and reminded everyone it was just cottonwood time.
Although I have seen snow in upstate NY that is a different story (and hopefully a different summer).

This thread has been maintained to support everyone out there that picked up the Yusa's.

Yusa Model Company went out of business some time ago, and SupraSales hasn't had any for a very long time, so I would say it's unlikely you will find any others out there.

The Happy Time Hobbies Katana is the same thing, however you won't get it for $80.

FYI - to everyone else, I just harvested the aluminum knuckles from a Thunder Tiger EB4 -S3 for the Yusa and they worked perfect, but did require a little front suspension re-tuning. A cheap option for replacement knuckles.
