Which brushed motors are you running again? Provided they are 7.2v jobbies -or there abouts-, I would have thought 4 A123 cells in 2s2p would be plenty of juice; I hear people saying things like 1hour run times with just Nimh packs, so you should be fine with 2s2p?... or maybe run 4s1p if you have 14.4v motors, something like that.
