friend wants to start RC what to buy?

Putting in another vote for the MGT here. I've got one I'm selling to a friend cheap so he can get involved with the RC fun.

I'm getting rid of all my nitro headache, the MGT was by far the easiest to stay tuned and start without shoulder pain, which is why I feel OK about selling it to a friend. Bullet proof truck, I've rebuilt the shocks and put a few sper gears in it, that's all.

Second to the MGT I would say a Losi XXXT would be my next suggestion (stay away from nitro all togeather, less mess, no pissed neighbors, more driving fun). Every LHS I've been in that serviced surface RC's had every part for the XXXT in stock, huge bonus.
