Does it still try to rip the tires off the rims and shear the teeth off of every gear on the vehicle?

I think your measuring end play. That won't tell you if your bearings are bad. You need to measure side to side play for bearing condition. If you feel any side to side play it's time to replace the bearings

Here is the response I got from Steve Neu. I would recommend you contact Neumotors and ask them if you should send it in for a check-up. It will take awhile to have the motor checked out, but on the other hand you don't want the motor to come apart on you.

NeuMotors:

Hello,
It might be a good idea to send it in for a check-up. .05 is a little too much.

Hi, I purchased a Neu 1515/1Y/F motor back in march 2008. Recently while cleaning/checking the motor I noticed some play in the front bearing. I tried to measure it with a dial indicator and I think it was about .05" worth of play.

Thanks
